Does Mathison have a first name?

What are the chances Smoral and McCullers sign in the second round? Seems to me like McCullers could make more money by going to school no matter where he's drafted, and Smoral may ask for more than teams are willing to give him after he's missed the entire spring.

I think Virant would be a good best-case scenario for the Orioles in the second round. If they can sign McCullers or Smoral I'd love that, but I'm not too sure that's happening.

Eagerly awaiting the info!

I'd have an idea ahead of time what Smoral/McCullers are looking. If it's $2.5 MM or less (Smoral should definitely be signable for that), and they are available in the second, I'm drafting them and punting upside on the rest of the draft. I'd put one of Gausman or Appel on the 40-man if it meant they'd sign for $3.25 MM. If it's McCullers, I might even punt on next year's 1st Rounder in order to sign him.

McCullers could definitely be lined-up to make $6+ MM in three years, provided he stays healthy at UF for three years. Depending on how the next 12-months go, Karsten Whitson might be wishing he took the money San Diego offered him.

That is bold. I take it the might would be dependent both on money and where you feel your team would be drafting next season?

Thanks for this.

Are there any penalties above losing the next year's first rounder? Like, if McCullers falls, could the O's decide to take him, punt the first rounder next year, and then just keep adding big upside, big money picks with no further penalties? Because that could totally be worth it.

Monetary penalties, plus after 15% over (I believe) you start losing multiple picks and first rounders for multiple years.

Wasn't one of the new agreements in the CBA that teams couldnt sign players to MLB deals?

Yes-MLB deals are not allowed. Teams can lose as many as 2 first round draft picks and pay a penalty of up to 100% of the excess spent. I seriously doubt any team is going to punt the next 2 years draft picks pluse pay the monetary penalty to sign anybody in this years draft.

That wouldn't stop a team from signing them to a MiLB deal then putting them on the 40 man.
They would probably only be allowed to do this if they were bringing the player directly to the Majors. It is also something, I believe, that would have to be done on a handshake basis as it could not be written into the MiLB deal.

Yes, would not be a MLB deal. Would be an agreement to add to the 40-man. Different issues.

I would not punt two picks, either.

This is not necessarily true, though I have not received clarification as of yet. Putting someone on the 40-man roster is a separate act from giving someone a MLB deal. The latter involves other issues, primarily those affecting paychecks.

Has a player ever been placed on a 40 man roster from the draft who didn't sign a major league deal nor was ready for the majors?
