Outside the first round

Thanks Stotle! Super job with the other rounds. How the Orioles pick in these rounds could really change the future of the team as we all know. i would like to see us add a few more lefthanded pitchers. The AL East teams still struggle facing lefties and we saw what Matusz did against Tampa yesterday. Britton could really help us when he is recalled this week and hopefully more lefthanders are on the way.

Does Brian Johnson the lefthander from U of Florida have more upside than Matt Smoral the high school lefthander?

Smoral has more upside but a lot less probability, including potential issues with arm action, pitch plane, and durability.

Johnson is a high probability lefty with four pitches and solid command. He could also be converted to 1b if things, for some reason, did not work out on the mound. He is solid defensively and has plus raw power with a playable hit tool.

I have seen Jarmon play both baseball and football. Stole, where do you see him getting picked? Is, there anyway he signs? I know he is very raw but the kid is a athletic freak. It would interesting to see what he could do concentrating on baseball.

I'd say undrafted or picked on Day 3 most likely. I don't consider him signable (though I am quite removed from that discussion).

From what I understand, you have a cap on spending in the 1st 10 Rounds. Is there anything to stop a team from going overslot in later rounds?

Any signing over $100K counts towards your allotment for rounds 1 to 10.

He played for my Alma Mater, he's close to unsignable, but if someone took him high enough he'd sign. Baseball is by far his passion, and he's not planning on playing football in college, but he's pretty focused on going to school, he really wants the college education, and no one is going to take him high enough to buy him out of school (2nd round money).

So did Billy Rowell. I'm not impressed with BP and hitting at team workouts. I'm impressed against reall pitching and real breaking balls and real changeups when you don't know what is coming or where it's going. This kid might be good but I'd rather hear how he did so well against a good pitcher. Right or Wrong?

I think DD made a similar comment when looking at scouting international players. It is hard to trust someone's ability if the fix is in on pitches like they play for the Blue Jays!

Similar to QB pro days...somehow they all make the throws there but it doesn't always translate after they get drafted.

    • Do we know what his velocity was today? I know he doesn't light up the gun but was he at his normal?
    • Longterm he’s probably that missing RH SU/MR that we’ve been looking for since the Fuji trade.  It’s probably Suarez vs Ramírez vs Tate for 1-2 bullpen spots. Wells and one of Irvin/Means could be in the bullpen mix as well.  Depth is good to have. I wouldn’t sleep on Ramirez either. Elias has shown a knack from adding relievers through trade or waivers.
    • There's not a single high level prospect on the team he pitched against tonight and even the one out he got was crushed
    • Let’s tap the brakes on his move to the bullpen. His stuff plays and he can get outs. Best of all, he doesn’t walk anyone. He challenges hitters and gets weak contact. With our defense, I’d rather him give up the occasional double or flared hit to the outfield than to see walks. Keep him in the starting rotation until he proves he doesn’t belong. Wells and Irvin both have experience in the pen and frankly for Irvin, though I love him, has a real tough time throwing strikes at times.    anyway, let’s see what the old dog can do.
    • I could see Suarez sticking in a bullpen role long term with the movement on his fastball. Also he might be able to throw a 2 to 3 more MPH harder not having to worry about trying to pitch six innings. The Orioles have done a good job finding pitchers who weren't expected to do much in recent years and it would be cool if Suarez is another find.
    • I mean, heres where we really find out if Holliday is cut out for the majors and if he has the character to fight through major adversity right off the bat right?  Saw a good point that there was a guy previously that started 4 of 55, and that was ole #8.  Mike Trout didnt get his batting average up to .200 until May 31st of his first season.  Ideal? Absolutely not.  But when the franchises all-time hits leader started with the same slump its something to pay attention to.
    • Going 1 for 25 is not hard to do. I would imagine many HS Senior players could do that if given 25 at bats in the big leagues. Not saying Holliday is not worthy, just how bad going 1 for 25 is. Had someone not been on 1st, he could be 0 for 25. I would like to see him more aggressive early in the count and more protective late in the count.
