4. ORIOLES. Baltimore is linked to the top high school (Correa) and college (Arizona State's Deven Marrero) shortstops available, but figures to take a pitcher unless Buxton miraculously falls to No. 4. Gausman has moved ahead of San Francisco righthander Kyle Zimmer in most teams' pecking order.

Projected Pick: KEVIN GAUSMAN.

Who does he have the Twins taking? In the local papers, they've more or less admitted they want a pitcher with their top pick and I doubt they're talking about Fried.

I'm not expecting Buxton to fall to #4, but I'd hardly call that "miraculous". Appel to the Astros, Gausman to the Twins, and either Correa or Zunino to the Mariners would not be too shocking. I'm still not even sure the O's would take him over Correa or Zimmer in that scenario.

Marrero, imo, would be a horrendous pick at #4. Legitimate defensive shortstops are undervalued, but I believe a team in the Orioles' situation needs to aim for a bit more ceiling with a pick this good.

Honestly, I would love to have Buxton or Correa but I'm fine with either Appel or Gausman. Obviously, one of them will be there at #4. I think I'll only be upset if the O's don't take one of those 4. Actually, I'll only be upset if the O's don't stick to their BPA mantra. If they happen to have Almora or Zimmer highest on their board thats ok too even though I would prefer one of the Correa, Buxton, Appel or Gausman.

Well I'd prefer they take Buxton or Correa. The Orioles lack of top position prospects needs to be fixed.

I don't disagree that the Os lack top position prospects outside of Machado and Schoop but they ALSO lack top pitching prospects outside of Bundy. Despite the excitement of these three guys, our system is still rather barren at all positions. Because of this I don't care which direction they go in regards to position.

Olney says

Gausman, understanding that his hand doesn't pronate in a way that allows him to throw a circle change in the best possible fashion, developing a split-change -- with a grip similar to that thrown by Tim Lincecum. He ditched the flat slider he threw in high school, and with help from LSU pitching coach Alan Dunn, he has developed a hard curveball. He picked up a new slider -- sharper, harder.

He put on 30 pounds, as his 6-foot-4 frame filled out. His arm slot got higher, as he refined his split-change, and Gausman worked on throwing each of his pitches from the same release point. Over time, he has learned to command both sides of the plate, against right-handed and left-handed hitters.

Some more premature fun.

Right. Take the best player available, pitcher or position player. This team needs the best talent it can find, wherever it is.

    • As someone else pointed out, he has always been a high strikeout guy and still found success, and plenty of hitters are very productive despite high strikeout numbers. I would also expect that to improve with experience, but even if this year is fully representative of the player he will be for us, that's still a very solid player. The 2024 AL rookie class is pretty weak though, I won't argue that.
    • Anything at the plate is a bonus. His defense alone warrants playing him right now.
    • If we can get hot from here on out, right through the playoffs, wouldn't that be a blessing and the unexpected.
    • I would expect it’s about easing him in (first game back in field).  They are going to be cautious with him coming back from a concussion.
    • 3 consecutive great starting pitcher games. Playoff performance level. The batshit a bit to a win, hopefully heating up for the next impressive run!
    • Hyde just said hopes Cano is back tomorrow. Soreness. Maybe that explains the 2 pitch outing. ….
    • Norby was hot for awhile but he's back to struggling the past couple weeks.  I think Cowser is who he is to an extent -- a very talented hitter who has always had high strikeout totals.  The league adjusted to his weaknesses and he's trying to adjust back, but it will probably take some time. Holliday just seems like he's not all there yet.  I think the expectations and hype machine messed with his head a bit, and now he's got to work his way back to finding his rhythm and his confidence.  He's only 20. Mayo hasn't had enough at bats. O'Hearn is simply not an every day player.  He's good when used as a role player. Adley is really the only one I'm concerned about at this point.  Some say they think he's playing hurt, but I'm not really buying it.  If he's playing hurt then why is he DHing at all when his bat is lifeless?  If he's hurt then send him down before he has to get sent down for forgetting how to hit.
