The Texas Rangers are Getting Smacked Around Lately

.

After starting the season like complete beasts in their first 14 games of the season at 12-2, the Texas Rangers have leveled off.

They were smacked around pretty good this past week. They have lost 5 of their last 6 games, including 3 blowouts by scores of 10-3 and 21-8 (both to the Mariners), and 12 -1 (to the Athletics).

Since taking 3 out of 4 games from the Orioles in early May, they are only 11-12 since.

Since beating the Tigers on April 21st, they are only 20-21 since.

The great "leveling" effect. No matter how hot or how terrible a team (or a player) begins the season, the overwhelming tendency is a return to the norm.

The 2004 Devil Rays won 12 games in a row. Their winning percentage in June 2004 was .769! They still finished the season 21 games below .500!

The AL West is still likely to be an interesting race.

    • Going to lookup splits before/after AS break for 2024, but my gut tells me the O’s faltered against the NL Central division the last two years. Let’s see how October plays out!
    • I've heard folks I trust a lot here report on him as being good but on a gut level those plays bugged me too. I think Holliday is sufficient alone as a 5th infielder as a playoff roster gets configured, and believe in series you get injury replacements if Urias re-rolls the ankle or Gunnar breaks somebody else's arm.    Rivera and Soto are kind of both about that speed. From comments we know Urias, Westburg, Mountcastle the probable return order, but TBD on the Rivera, Soto, Eloy departures.    I think there's some value to Coby Mayo staying around even if he just watches ala '70 Grich "did not play in series".
    • He missed a cycle by inches on one of the doubles.
    • Baumann gave up #50
    • Absolutely unbelievable.  3rd homer was off a position player, but who cares.  Just a tremendous performance by an exceptional talent.
    • Going into today NL was up 352-311 in Interleague play.  2977 - 2851 in runs.     Perhaps a partial explanation is that the NL is overall better this year. That said 3 games vs any team says very little.    Odd stat.
    • I do think it is an interesting bone to pick at if analytical preparation is tiered like ticket prices, and the guys just aren't as ready for "random NL pitcher" as they are for Chris Bassitt or Luis Gil. We'll see in the coming years.     The 2024 National League champions will get the full treatment if we are that fortunate. You can't pitch Corbin Burnes every day or tax too many brain cells with Hayden Birdsong.
