2nd Round - Brandon Kline: RHP, UVA

Recommended Posts

MLB Bio: The Red Sox knew Kline would be a tough sign, as many Virginia commits are. Now, three years later, Boston and the other 29 teams will have the chance to draft one of the better college closers in the country. With a projectable Brandon Morrow-like frame, Kline has a very live arm with clean action that delivers fastballs regularly in the low-90s, and there might be more velocity in the future. He throws a hard curve and is willing to throw it at all times. He commands both pitches well and has the mentality that works in the back end of a bullpen. While Kline closes in college, he may not fit that role ideally at the next level, though increased velocity might help in that regard. Even if he doesn't rack up saves, he could reach the big leagues quickly as a setup man.

UVA Profile

Baseball Prospect Nation: Though things aren’t as “free and easy” as they have been in the past, Kline is still shows a low-90s fastball with good life and angle to the plate. His slider shows potential and he needs a consistent third pitch to remain a starter in pro ball.

Delete my thread if you want. Frederick native, stuff should play up in the bullpen. Duquette liked drafting local guys in Boston, this looks like a continuation of that trend.

Yeah, DD wasn't kidding when he said he liked drafting local guys. Seems like a solid pick though maybe the upside isn't too great.

Don't know anything about him, but a right-hander with low-90s velocity who profiles as a setup guy (according to his MLB profile) seems like a strange second round pick. Hopefully we'll hear more about his upside as people find info on him.

Not bad. I really wish we would have went with a true power bat, but not dissatisfied with this pick at all. He reminds me of Dan Klein (pretty much the same last name) in that he'll be a quick riser, although I don't know if there's any injury history here.

This is my thoughts on it initially as well. Any reliever w low-90s velo seems a bit low on the upside to me to be drafting here. Hope to hear more about him.

It is going to be interesting to see what we do with him. He had a solid year as a starter this year, going 7-3 with a 3.56 ERA and 94 Ks in 93.2 innings. I think he could be in a ML bullpen now, but maybe with a little work on his secondary stuff, he could be an effective starter in time. I guess we'll see.

    • When did I make them a mutually exclusive thing? I've said all along that I think Elias has done a great job rebuilding this organization. I've never once not agreed with that statement.  I'm not a fan of Elias's draft strategy of basically ignoring pitching until later rounds nor am I fan of their pitching development under him, particularly the babying of their minor league pitchers with very low pitch counts. Again, I never said Elias has failed, I said his drafting philosophy has failed after the 1st round. Elias has done a remarkable job drafting in the 1st round, particularly with his top 5 picks, but I've shown many times over, his college bat philosophy has largely been a failure outside of the 1st round.  Now, the jury is still out on whether Elias has successfully fully rebuilt this franchise because he's yet to win a playoff game. Not a series, a game. Not a single playoff game win. Duquette won more playoffs games in his first full season as GM then Elias has ever won as a GM. Those are just facts.  Now I appreciate what Elias done and the fact that the International scouting under Kobe Perez is starting to look like it will start bearing fruit, that's a huge win too. But the fact remains that Elias has yet to win a single playoff game and after drafting mostly hitters in his first 5 rounds since 2019, his offense scored one run in two playoffs games as they were embarrassingly swept by the Royals and that was after an embarrassingly sub .500 second half where his offense took a nosedive. All of those college hitters taken since 2019 and how many were in the Orioles starting lineup in the playoffs? Three, Rutschman, Westburg and Cowser.  The two starters he used in the Royals series were acquired by needing to send a 1st round (Hall) and 2nd round (Baumeister) pitcher as parts of the deals. So what we know is that Elias has shown the ability to have his team be competitive for the playoffs the last two years, but now has only Eflin left of the two starters, and his team looking a lot more like the Blue Jays (With all their young hitting talent and no playoff wins) than a team ready to win a World Series.
    • Nothings ever easy with you is it
    • I'd rather win some playoff games.
    • Would rather play better D and win 101 again
    • And still win 90 games.
    • I'm wondering if Elias feels Povich is neck and neck with Rogers for the 5th starter slot
    • Is Elias allowed to talk about a player's medical report without the player's consent?
