Overall No. 1 Pick Correa Signs for $4.8 mm

Recommended Posts

There should be some savings here for the Os relative to our overall pool from Gausman.

The question is how much - obviously.

I am sure parameters were discussed before the draft and I would have expected (admittedly not knowing anything) discussions were in the $3.75M area - which would open a nice chunk of $ for the oversigns after round 10.

Zimmer's deal closer to $3M might enable the Os to sign Gausman for closer to $3.5M or less.

Interesting dynamic to this draft that teams at the top of the draft are saving $ for the overslots after the 10th round from their early picks while some teams lower in the draft (or with multiple picks) are saving for their oversigns by drafting college seniors inside the first 10 rounds and signing them cheap. IMO, this gives the teams at the top of the draft a bit of an edge as they should be signing and drafting better talent in the first round and in the other early rounds (2-10). We'll see.

I want this deal for under slot money. I dont see how he gets slot. The guy has NO breaking pitch. He has a fastball that isnt 80. His change up is considered top notch but he is a work in progress with either the slider or the curve.

When we got Matusz he had four pitches. When we got Bundy was just plus plus on Fastball, Fastball control and curve.

Sign him but not for slot. Period.

Maybe we really hard ball him and take his pick at number 5 next year and hope for better selection? The Nats didnt lose much by passing on a guy several years ago in the first round.

Your evaluation of Gausman is less positive than Stotle's, that's for sure.

I know this...I don't want the O's to be in the position to take a Drew Storen-like guy at #5 next year. I'm sure they'll get Gausman done.

This opinion is pretty absurd and your view of Gausman doesn't really mesh with people that definitely know what they're talking about. Do you know how rare an 80 grade fastball is? He has NO breaking pitch? That's an exaggeration. Stotle graded Gausman over Matusz and Bundy, by the way.
