Give Pearce a chance

Pearce is making a case for himself. I think he is pushing the O's to think about optioning O'Day after the break if Markakis, Chavez and Britton come back.

Markakis, Chavez, Britton and Teagarden up; Paulino, Mahoney, Avery and O'Day optioned. Davis/Pearce in left. Love to see them do something with Gregg not I don't see it happening. BRob's injury makes Flaherty's stay as a back up infielder a better fit.

Just a nit pick that itll be Tillman coming up instead of Britton. And Tolleson is getting called up today so you can send him back down as one of the players to go down. I would send Avery down to keep Pearce right now, even though I would love to have that speed. Preferably, DD could dump Reynolds and his contract on LAD.

The Jim Thome trade makes that kind of tough, unless you sit one of Reynolds, Betemit, or Davis.

Yeah, and it's part of the reason I didn't really understand the Thome trade. The Orioles need to move Davis or Reynolds.

I was thinking Davis/Pearce.

Ahem...

It makes no sense which is why an explanation from WildCard would be nice.

I was looking at the roster from the standpoint of when many of the DL players have been recalled.

1B - Reynolds - no options left

2B - Andino - no options

SS - Hardy - no options

3B - Betemit - no options

C - Wieters - will not be optioned

LF - Davis - no option

CF - Jones - will not be optioned

RF - Markakis - will not be optioned

DH - Thome - no options

BC - Teagarden - no options

UIF - Flaherty - Rule 5

Corner OF - Pearce - no options

UOF - Chavez - no option

That is 13 position players with Avery, Paulino, Mahoney and Tolleson being optioned mostly because O's management thinks there will be injuries in the future and needs to hold on to as many players as possible.

Starters

Hammel

Chen

Tillman

Gonzalez

Britton

Although several of the starters have option, DD and Buck go for the best starters available. (This is with the hope that Britton is ready by July 17th when a 5th starter in needed)

Relievers

Johnson - no options

Strop - no options

Ayala - no options

Lindstrom - no options

Patton - no options

Gregg - no options (love to see him DFA'd or traded but don't see it is happening)

Eveland - no options - O's need a long man/spot starter

That is 7 relievers and a 25 man roster. O'Day has an option and have been allowing runs lately. 5 ER in his last 3.1 IP. The O's have too many short relievers.

O'Day down:

1) Because using his option allows him to return when injuries occur.

2) Avoids DFAing Pearce

3) Allows O'Day to pitch at AAA were he can work on pitching better.

So in other words, he gave up a home run last night? :D

Let's just say, I'll be shocked if Darren O'Day gets optioned because he's allowed 5 runs in his last 3.1 IP. His ERA has skyrocketed all the way up to 2.50. He's an integral part of the bullpen. Not happening unless he gets shelled a lot more.

We really will not know until July 17th when a 5th starter is required. Trades or injuries could solve the problem. If none of that happens the O's will have to pick a player to go. Since Gregg has not been that player the O's will pick between optioning O'Day or DFAing Pearce or Chavez. Without Avery on the team Chavez has the edge on playing all three OF positions.
