Another question about our 2005-11 first round picks

Recommended Posts

So

Bruce, Stubbs, Moskos, Hosmer, Sanchez, Taillon, Bauer

vs

Brandon Snyder, Rowell, Wieters, Matusz, Hobgood, Machado, Bundy

I'd rather have

Bruce

Stubbs

Wieters

Matusz(bias towards Matusz, Hosmer is still a good player)

Hobgood-Sanchez is a push

Taillon-Machado is a push but gun to my head I'd actually pick Taillon.

Bundy

So 3 O's I'd rather have against 3 non O's with one push. I think that's pretty good.

Right now, the non-Os group is ahead in terms of WAR (22.6 fWAR/16.4 rWAR vs 14.2 fWAR/10.7 rWAR). But I like the O's group going forward quite a bit more. I don't think Moskos or Sanchez will provide any/much value, nor will Rowell or Hobgood.

Bruce is a very nice player; looks to be about a 2-3 WAR player going forward.

Stubbs is in a real funk; might not be more than a good 4th OF option - say 1 WAR.

Then there's Hosmer, Taillon, and Bauer, who are basically top-tier prospects.

On the O's side, Wieters looks good for 3-4 WAR easy, with the ever-present possibility that he puts it all together offensively.

Matusz is a replacement-level pitcher with potential.

Then as prospects you have Machado and Bundy, with Snyder as a middling, take-a-chance sort of guy.

I think it's close. Wieters looks like the best player of the bunch right now, but you get two top pitching prospects with the other group. For me, it depends on Matusz. If I still think he's a TOR-type of pitcher, I'd take the O's group. If not, I think I'd take the other.

How about the group taken immediately in front of us -- Jay Bruce, Drew Stubbs, Daniel Moskos, Eric Hosmer, Tony Sanchez, Jameson Taillon, Trevor Bauer? Do you like that better than the group Jordan selected?

I can understand if your question was the players taken right after. We had no chance to take these players.

No, but those teams who picked ahead of us had a chance to pick our guys instead, so did they actually do better? That's my question. I already asked the question about the guys picked immediately after ours in another thread.

Are you planning on doing one for each group?

Not sure what you are asking. I already ran a poll asking people to choose between the Orioles' 7 picks, the 7 picks immediately after them, and then the 7 picks after that. The majority felt that the 7 picks immediately after our picks (which included Lincecum) were better than our 7 picks.

Are you gonna make another thread about players taken two picks before us, and 3 picks before us? See if those teams did better, would change.

I guess I'm a week late to this thread, but why can't Frobby ask whatever question he wants? If you don't have anything nice to say...
