Maybe someone's mentioned this in the 45 pages on this trade, but Luke Scott's career OPS+ is about the same as Miguel Tejada's OPS+ as an Oriole. Even plugging in a crappy defense-only shortstop and benching Payton the O's have probably not lost much of anything on offense.

They fail to see or mention that he was in a horrible environment and probably just didn't care.

He showed great power when he came back from his injury...Miggy will be back in Houston.

I'm with you....and he could hit 35 homers and a buttload of doubles in that park.

Well, I just meant his numbers, not so much by his age. Kakes will be better, by a lot, but as psyched as everyone was about his season this year, imagine having a very similar season on the other corner, while Kakes continues to grow.

I could also see Patton in the rotation this year. Danny better have his game arm ready by spring training.

The thing is, hes not going to put up Tejada's numbers, so it doesn't matter. It would matter if he was 23 or something but hes not.

I guess Im being over negative here, as it doesn't matter who is in LF for us because in a year or so Reimold will be there knocking the hell out of the ball, so at least Luke could be the best stopgap we've had in some time.

I disagree Mike, although I'll have more on this shortly, the Orioles just added a lot of depth in the organization for a player's who's value was dropping fast then the temperatures outside.

Depth in the organization -- maybe.

Major league baseball starters -- doesn't appear so.

The way you feel about this deal ultimately boils down to two premises

1.) Do you trust that AM got the most value he could for Tejada (all things, like salary considered)?

2.) Do you think the package we received will be more valuable than Tejada?

If you answered yes to both of these questions, then the deal makes sense to you.

Personally I think it's a good deal as what we will likely be receiving is a decent bullpen arm, a left fielder that figures to produce slightly less than Tejada (or at least he could be traded for something else of value), a third baseman that will have an obp around .350 and hit for power (maybe move him to first and keep Moore at third since they both are similarly productive players, and Greg65 informed me that Costanzo can't field very well), and two potential middle of the rotation starters. All the players should be under our control for 6 years (besides Scott) and will all be cheap. This compared to 2 more years of a declining Tejada, who is owed a decent amount of money.

Its only been a few hours since the Tejada trade was announced and already people are saying we just got hosed or whatever.

Have we seen any of these guys playing in an Orioles uniform in the AL East yet?

Is it possible we can simply wait to see how these guys pan out?

First we complained that MacPhail was waiting too long to pull the trigger on a trade -- now we complain that we didn't get enough for Tejada.

For the most part no one cared about the Orioles and wasn't likely to trade major talent to us for Tejada or Bedard so far.

The proposed Roberts/Cubs trade seems to be pretty good on paper but we also haven't seen that yet or anything else pan out.

Sure this might not have been a blockbuster trade that makes ESPN stop and shudder... but we are also talking about a trade from a team that most people look at as a colossal joke for a player who has had some personality issues and might be all over a congressional report about steroids.

Try to put things into perspective here.

Luke Scott has only had 663 at bats in the majors, though. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Why the heck was he in the minors so long? His numbers were pretty good.

Not sure I agree. Patton and Costanzo both have the potential to be part of the Orioles future by the time they are competitive and I wouldn't rule out Scott. At 29-years old, it's not like he's ancient.

This is my first post here after a long time of browsing the board. Life-long Orioles fan since mid-80's. Love the OH!

I like this deal. Of course if you can get an A+ prospect you do, but at this point we get a potential corner OF who doesn't hurt us offensively or defensively. Plus more pitching depth. Also, no one (short of Belkast) knows if any of these are to be flipped later on.

UH.... if you project his numbers, he actually put up a better OPS than Miggy. Yeah, it's at a less premium position, but it was basically a swap of players that were equals. There is no proof that Miggy was going to get back to his "old self," particularly when the Mitchell Report tells us who his "old self" really was.

Then we also get a ML ready starting pitcher (a #2 or #3), a ML ready starter/reliever, and two guys who will be in the majors by 09 presumably? We raped on this deal.

That's a fine haul for Baltimore. The Astros pretty much cleaned out their farm system for two years of an average-hitting third baseman. The average NL 3B had an .804 OPS in '07; Tejada was at .799 in the AL. I know some readers think I'm an Astro-hater but that's not the case. I just think they gave up way too much here. Patton was ranked their third best prospect by Baseball America, Costanzo sixth. Scott is a cheap quality regular, and Albers was third on the team's 2007 top prospect list.
