Official-Tejada to Houston

Go do some more and see if they trade someone else.;)

We got:

Patton and Albers: Their top 2 pitching prospects. Nothing spectacular, but solid.

Costanzo: 3B prospect that they obtained in the Lidge deal. Looks to have great power.

Scott: 30 year old OF with solid OPS production.

Sarfate: Lower level RP prospect with power stuff.

I like the deal. There are also a bunch of people who don't like it and refer to this as "quantity over quality", preferring a "sexy" star (who may not have even been available for Miggy) back over several solid prospects.

I'm with you, I like this trade. Certainly better than the rumored Burke, Everett, Scott/Patton deal. Mostly, I'm happy because I feel like this is the start of a flurry of action for the O's.

June 17th, 18th, 19th. Houston @ Camden. Cancer causing baby killer or not, Miggy gave us his all while he was here, and we should show that we appreciate what he did for us. I'll be there.

Back on topic, it sounds like most folks are a bit upset with what we got in return. I don't know these guys, but really, what could we expect based on the year Miggy had last year? We should be more upset about the fact that we didn't trade him sooner, when his value was actually decent.

Or waited a year until his value is back up -- which I predict will happen this summer in Houston.

I think its funny that Scott would of been our best hitter last year if he was on our team.

This deal is pretty solid. Not great, but not nearly as bad as what some people are making it out to be.

Patton's upside ranges from a #4 to a #2. Albers projects as a back of the rotation guy, but he looks like a reliever at this point. With that said, I think he could make a very good reliever. Sarte is a throw in with a big arm, Costanzo is a Scott Moore type. And Scott is kinda a guy that the O's usually avoid...low average, good OBP, good power, platoon-type corner OFs. He has value for us and other teams. We add a good amount of depth to our system as well. We absolutely could of done worse.

Playing devil's advocate - why wait until after they play a few games? We really shouldn't judge until we've seen their entire playing careers to judge their time with the Orioles. And if we're going to wait longer, we might as wait maybe a decade or two to see how this latest rebuilding effort really compares with other Orioles movements, like the Oriole Way, and the FA teams of the mid 90s.

MSK - I understand your point, and people here tend to be overly demonstrative, and declarative. However, that's kinda what this place is about... expressing and debating and discussing opinions. One person's whining is the other side's "support".

My suggestion for anyone, and nobody in particular, is that if you know something in a thread is going to bother you, try to skim past it, or put any repeated offenders on ignore. I usually end up less stressed when I do it, as a result.

And hey... at least something actually happened, rather than continuing to debate hypotheticals. :D

I'm not real high on this trade, though I am glad we've finally done something. Had the Orioles actually gotten off their butts and traded Tejada last offseason, they could have landed a bigger return, but no, they sat around and twiddled their thumbs and pretended they could contend the way they always do and Tejada's value dropped and this is what we wind up with. It's not dreck, but these guys seem to have fairly large downsides and I think we went with quantity over quality. The fact that the best player in the deal is 29 is alarming. What the hell are we trading Roberts for if we're just going to pick up more of these guys? Maybe this was the best McPhail could do, but we should have traded Tejada earlier and thus far I am not all that impressed.

VATech makes a good point about the rumored offer of Santana/Ayber for Tejada last year. Do you agree that this is at least a superior deal than that?

Maybe if AM were here last year, the haul for Tejada at that time would have been sweeter. But it was a whole different FO and owner relationship going on then.

I think it was a good trade honestly, safety in numbers. Also, look through the history of trades in MLB and you'll see that more often than not a trade that looked like a bad one usually turned out better for the team the traded the one player for many, not one for one. I don't get the complaining, it's annoying. People say Miggy sucks on defense, Miggy this, Miggy that and then they expect multiple top flight prospects in return. Doesn't make any sense.

Just spoke with a buddy of mine in Houston and the general consensus down there is that this was a horrible trade for them. That made me feel a lot better about this deal.

Same, I looked around and they are a lot more upset than the few angry mob here. We came out on top.

Why won't he put up Tejada's numbers? Yes, I believe you are being overly negative. We have Scott under our control for 3 more years. We have Markakis under our control for four more years. Scott is likely to add a lot of value while under our control for not a lot of money.

This is about the 4th time you've made a statement like this. I offered a disagreement with your argument on page 5 of this thread, but got no response. Care to respond to this post?

I didn't see that on page 5, last post of the page, must have missed it.

I know that this looks good the more that I get into it, but its going to have to be proven to me this season and next.

I really hope this is not the last trade, because I've always had the fear that we would just pull off a Tejada deal, and if thats the case, this doesn't cut it.

Notice the two position players we got both know how to take a walk. Hopefully that is part of a new organizational philosophy. (Although I'd still certainly want to bring in Kemp)

Quick, name the last Oriole acquisition who had above-average plate discipline...

Kevin Millar, then before that... ummm... Jack Cust? Before that... Melvin Mora? That's a good one every three or four years, and they just picked up two.
