Competitive Balance Lottery

Recommended Posts

We're not there yet, but with the defensive guys they have coming in so far with the next class, they're on their way.

If Kiehl can just be a slightly above average QB and all those young guys on the OL make the same jump from FR to SO, our running game can carry us a long way. McCalebb, Mason and Blakely (with Proesch blocking) should put up big numbers in the backfield.

I'd also look for Lutz to have a big year...the TE is a pretty big feature of Loeffler's offense. And it helps that we have one of the best in the country.

Sorry for the thread hi-jack, everyone.

Don't trade that pick, DD! There, now we're back.

Yep, Lutz and Blake are a big part of our passing game. From what I've read, Loeffler wants to use the RB more in the pass offense. That works for us because we seem to have a big problem developing WR. They come in with lots of stars, but they don't work out that way (ahem, Trooper). Coincidentally, Adams and Blake weren't big recruits.

Yeah, sorry for the thread jack. That was my fault.

Should the O's stay over .500 this year, 2013 will be the first amateur draft in my memory without a top 10 (usually top 5) pick. Getting the 34th pick along with a middle of the first round pick really helps this team. And there is a good chance the boost in MASN ratings and attendance will pull the Oriole's out of the bottom 10 in revenue so we won't get an extra pick next season.

Let's make it count! Gotta work the system as it is.

IMO, it is silly that these picks can be traded or whatever. If the purpose of the pick is to offer a sort of competitive balance, then it seems silly to trade it.

I will say it would be tremendously disappointing if this pick were traded by our FO.

If a trade can be made with this pick and not a guy already showing promise it helps. A guy that has produced in the majors has more worth than a minor leaguer. I would think keeping a Schoop (if thats our preference) over a supplemental type pick is worth it and helps us get a player for less than we would have without the pick.

I like how the first few rounds don't benefit the stronger teams as much as it used to. The original concept of compensation for Free Agents may have had good intentions but it had the opposite effect. Baseball thought that it would keep teams in tact more, by adding a cost to signing a player, but it really only rewarded teams and provided incentives for teams to let their stars walk. The signing team only gave up a 1st round pick, but the other team, got two 1st round picks in return. So the system benefited the teams that already were strong, and did little to help the teams that were struggling. Which is why you constantly saw the Red Sox, Yankees, and A's with many picks before we even got to our second. Even though we would have awful records, our 2nd pick wouldn't effectively be until the 3rd round.

Now, the compensation is significantly scaled back. The signing team loses their top pick that isn't a top 10 one, and the former team only gets back one sandwich pick, and that only applies if there's a franchise tag tender offered (something like $12 mil or so or one year). Plus, with the lottery, struggling teams could have 3 picks early in the draft, while the successful teams will have to make do not having a 2nd pick until what will basically be the 3rd round, if they haven't already lost their picks to free agent signings.

With the new developments in scounting, and the rookie cap pool, I think that we're going to see new opportunities for struggling teams to turn around their franchise, while successful teams are going to struggle to retool until they can get towards the front of the draft. We might see more of an NFL parity style.

    • I love the wall. Love it. I think every Major League ballpark should have dimensions like that. By and large teams build parks with much smaller dimensions than a century ago, despite the players being dramatically bigger, stronger, faster athletes. It makes no sense. The game would be improved with much larger outfields. It would emphasize speed and athleticism over endless lineups of slow sluggers.
    • Yes, so hes a FA, the Discussion should now turn to what Elias or anybody else might offer next year. and it's tough because at 34 he's almost a one year wonder. But I do know this our season came back from trouble all year and Big Al was there to help many times.
    • We all know you think you're passionate about your team and your ideas. but the way you continually insult people whose ideas you don't agree with, or who disagree with you, is incredibly childish.   It's a form of cyber-bullying.   I'd like to think you're better than that, and wonder why more people don't call you out on it.  Maybe they know it won't change anything? Is it not possible to disagree without having to insult either the person or their thoughts?  I know it's hard to self-reflect and realize that you constantly do this, and maybe make a change for the better, but I kind of expect some insults are now headed my way for trying to make this place a bit less hostile.
    • We'll see Rubenstein talks a good game, but actions speak louder than words. Also it's on Elias to be willing to make a splash if the right (but also pricey) player become available and wants to be an Oriole. I was never big on an Adley extension even last year with the way catchers age. Gunnar is a player you absolutely lock up to an early contact extension assuming he is even open to it.
    • I think for almost all owners payroll matters more than winning. Even teams like the Yankees are careful with how they go into penalty.
    • For sure. That's why the Hyde quote implies he is a free agent.
    • Who really cares what the payroll is?  And if you do,  why?  If we hadn't been swept out of the playoffs would we even be arguing this?  In the end the amount the Os pay isn't the issue or problem.  It's how the team performs on the field.  Sure we all know that payroll and wins have a fairly strong correlation to each other,  but it isn't exact or perfect at all.   Should we increase payroll?  Sure,  provided you makes the team better.  But increasing the payroll while not improving the team by doing so seems goofy.   Sign a #1 or #2, absolutely.   Move on from the platoon at 1st with a guy who can take up one roster spot and hit both rhp and lhp,  like Walker?  Sign me up.  Sign an impact OF and split at bats between Mullins, Cowser, Kjerstad and him?  Sounds good to me.   Replace Mountcastle with just a more expensive version of the same?  What's the point?  Sign an expensive pitcher to replace Povich with the same results?  Why,  other then a depth move?  I'm all for signing free agents and spending money,  just do it wisely and don't do it just to say we signed someone.   Actually improve the team or stand pat.  Making moves just to make moves is how you end up with Rogers types. Payroll matters, yeah.   But winning matters more.   If we can win with a 100M payroll, fine.   If it needs to be 200M to win,  that's fine with me too.  Just win games,  and let the window we have stay open as long as possible... and most importantly win the WS for the first time since 1983.
