Pirates and Orioles "among the teams pushing hardest for Headley"

SO WRONG they wanna move him cause they can get a a lot for him. Plus they have a rookie ready to take his spot in James Darnell.

????

Of course they want to move him because they can get a lot for him. But the Pads are going to dictate the market - not the teams interested.

With 6 to 8 teams going after him,a deal will happen.

You think Headley can be had for Schoops and some lesser prospects? I would think he would require one of Matusz/Arrieta/Britton plus Schoop, and one of Avery/Hoes. Everything I've read indicates the Pads are asking for a ton.

If so, I don't want him that badly.

It's going to take Schoop/Matusz/Avery, or something very comparable to that IMO. And he'd be worth it. I'd be reluctant to give up Schoop and Matusz, sure, but at a certain point we have to stop over valuing every prospect or once prospect and take a guy like Headley who will help us now and in the future.

I certainly hope not. We gave up Finley, Harnisch, and Schilling for Glenn Davis, and Davis was a legit 30-HR threat with a great OBP before he came to Baltimore. The deal you and other people are suggesting are starting to take on those overtones, and Headley is not the player everyone thought Davis was going to be.

He's not the only other third baseman in the world. If a GM convinces himself he needs THIS player, he's going to get taken to the cleaners. That's probably what happened in the Bedard deal. I hope DD is examining all the options available.

Actually, he's just about the only 3B in the world - that position is ridiculously weak right now, and it would fill a glaring hole for us for a few years at least. He's had a 4.9 fWAR season, and should come close to that again this season. Schoop is a prospect and the prospect of Matusz rebounding is intriguing, but still a toss-up. Matusz would be successful in Petco, IMO. Even if Matusz rebounds, he's still going to be a fly ball pitcher, and therefore will have his struggles here in Baltimore. Again, I'd like not to give up that much, but at a certain point you have to pull the trigger on a deal like this.

Remember Buck's presser when he was hired and he made the Brave heart reference? Hold, hold, hold... Now! The time is now. We need to make this happen.

Here's a stack ranking of 3Bmen by fWAR this season - http://www.fangraphs.com/graphswd.aspx?teamid=0&pos=3B&season=2012&season1=2012&grid=25

I think many here underrate him.

I have seen Gyorko play tons when I was at WVU. I like his game a lot !!

Yeah, dude can rake and has been on fire lately, making SD more comfortable with dealing Headley. Downside is their front office knows the O's are in desperate need of a 3B and they are dealing from a position of strength. And depth.

Also, if the Pirates wind up getting Headley, I would be a proponent of immediately asking the Bucs about Alvarez, as has been suggested here before. And they would likely demand far less than SD wants for Headley.

The Pirates have a ton of pitching that they could move and the Orioles have a ton of flawed pitching that it could move. I would be fine with including Matusz/Tillman in the deal in addition to Hoes and maybe a lesser prospect, but I think that we are going to be up in arms over what another team is going to pay for Headley if he is traded.

Alvarez is fairly worthless imo. He's terrible defensively, and in a 1000 career PA he has an OBP% of .300. He has power, and he's relatively young, but he isn't much of an upgrade over Betemit really.

I agree with you but if you can get Alvarez straight up for a guy like Arritea it would be a great move for us. I would even be inclined to throw in a prospect. Alvarez still has a chance to turn it around being as young as he is and if he develops he could be a Longoria type bat that this team has been lacking for years. We have plenty of questionable pitching prospects in Matusz, Britton, Tillman, and Arritea this would be a very very nice buy low talent just like Strop. To me its worth the risk even if you have to send a decent prospect like Avery along with Arritea.

First, Alvarez is no Longoria. Never will be, and frankly, doesn't deserve to be in the same sentence as him. He probably tops out as Chris Davis if he's lucky. That has value, especially since it masquerades itself as a 3rd baseman, but I wouldn't want his glove at 3rd.

2) Arrieta is similar to Alvarez in that there both "failed" prospects, change of scenery guys at this point. I wouldn't do that trade but I can see the defense of it. However, to throw in Avery is pure absurdity imo. I don't think I'd do Avery for Alvarez straight up at this point.

    • Tanner Scott is on his final year with the Marlins and Hunter Harvey has one more year with the Nats, those are the likely biggest available names. Kopech from CWS is also a potential RP option. Problem is there are very few actually worthwhile players on the teams that will sell - I don’t expect the Giants, Astros, Cardinals or Angels to sell even if they should. The Nats have some good young players that won’t be available, and not much else. And the Rockies are baffling adverse to trading any of their players, if they even end up with someone worth trading for.  Mason Miller and Jesus Luzardo have plenty of team control left (pretty much all of it for Miller, and 2 years after this one for Luzardo), they will get talked about a lot but are not super likely to move. Luzardo also has pitched quite poorly thus far.
    • Because you and I text often, and did during the game yesterday...you know how annoying and negative I can be. I'm a whiner and complainer when it comes to this team. But when we win, and I see some kind of performance like Henderson gave...I want to write a sonnet or symphony in my mind...paint some sort of masterpiece. I have to put my joy SOMEWHERE. Yes, I probably am over the top in my love for this team. WEAMS came and stayed at my home a few years ago and was mesmerised by my Oriole  collection of memorabilia that goes back more than 50 years when I was a batboy. Brooks Robinson and Palmer stayed for a weekend once. I was told to take all my Oriole stuff down, lest Brooks think I'm a kook. Brooks David, his son, told me to "keep all the stuff up...my dad LOVES this stuff. And Brooks Sr did INDEED "love the stuff". So, yes, even in a long up and down season...I cant curb my addiction. I sulk when we lose or are losing...and I'm giddy as a 5 year old when we win dramatically. Maybe I should seek a therapist. But I don't want to. I dont want to or need to be "fixed"....To quote the line from earlier in this comment...."I love this stuff". Its a romance that breaks my heart sometimes, but when it's right and I'm happy...nothing else in sports for me, comes close.
    • I have a feeling they take a corner in the first round
    • We've been also doing this while carrying Holliday's bat.  Other than that, we have a Braves level offense.
    • You can’t see injury or decline until it happens. And he will decline in his 30s.  Whether or not he has injury issues is to be seen.
    • I hope this thread doesn't start a jinx!!!!!!! 😀 Waving my anti-jinx wand!!!!  Baseball is a game of averages. Don't assume anything long term - as sure as it may seem. Just cross fingers and enjoy the now.
    • I agree on the Nats, which is why they are at the bottom of the list. They do  Hunter Harvey coming into final arbitration year, which is appealing.
