Orioles Acquire Omar Quintanilla

Don't think so. Quintanilla bats left-handed, just like Flaherty. If they option Tolleson, they'll have nobody to play 2B against left-handed pitchers.

It does make me think something's about to happen with Flaherty.

Maybe, but i will not hold my breath waiting for a trade including Flaherty. I think the near term plan is for Quintanilla to play 2nd everyday and Tolleson to go to the minors. Tolleson will be back in September. DD thinks he has just improved the infield defense and possibly has a #2 hitter so Hardy can be moved down.

There is no predicting Buck and DD, but I don't think this move is setting up a trade. Its could be pretty interesting in Mid August when Andino is ready to come back roster wise.

I also think there is a trade in the works that includes Flaherty. Even if they play Quintanilla every day they would have Tolleson to platoon with Betemit at 3B. Flaherty looked pretty glum tonight on the bench. late in the game, like he knew something.

Quintinalla has been brought in to play 2B and bat 9th. Hardy will remain in the #2 hole.

Quintanilla, 30, has appeared in 29 games for the Mets this year, playing both middle infield positions. He has a .257/.250/.371 batting line in 80 plate appearances so far this year. The seven-year MLB veteran has a career batting line of .218 /.278 /.294.

Per MLBTradeRumors:

Orioles GM Dan Duquette told reporters, including Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun that he's on the lookout for high on-base percentage hitters. ?Hopefully, [Omar Quintanilla] is a good on-base man. Take a look at his OBP capabilities with the Mets. He was good. We hope he brings the same [thing] with us. ... "[but] we are looking at our on-base capabilities. No question. We need to do a better job with that," Duquette said.

Yup.

Yes, I understand that. I'm sure DD understands that and they have scouted him and they see something to believe he can continue near his current level (probably against RHP).
I think it has more to do with his defense. That and they may be moving Flaherty. His bat isn't much nor are his LH/RH splits,.

Well, yeah of course it has a lot to do with his defense. I also agree it probably means moving Flaherty. His LHP splits are unbelievably horrible.

Well his OBP is .350 this year not .250. He's probably a platoon guy against RHP.

1) My mistake.

2) He has 70 AB's this year. He has 592 career AB's. So...for 522 of his 592 ML AB's, he's been horrible in re: getting on base. His MiL numbers paint a different picture in that regard, but he's never, before 70 AB's this season, translated his MiL success to the majors.

I think DD's comments sounded pretty ridiculous, either way, but here's hoping he is, in fact, much smarter and more well-informed than I impliedly gave him credit for in my initial post.

Flaherty is probably part of the Headley deal along with Matusz and another pitcher. I think DD will make this deal before Monday. Just a hunch. I think we are going to get Garza and he will face his former team next week at OP. Dempster pitched last night and Garza faces the Cardinals tonight. Dempster appears to be headed to the Dodgers. If not he could pitch Wednesday at OP against Tampa or Garza could pitch Thursday before we head to NY and Tampa for 6 games. Dempster would start Monday in NY and Garza would start Tuesday depending on which one we obtain. I think we will add Garza and possibly Soriano before leaving Cleveland on Monday. Has anyone seen a 4 game series that runs to Monday lately? Very unusual and it's scheduled. It's not a makeup game. Garza, Headley and possibly Soriano added could make the AL East look a whole lot different over the next 10 weeks.

LOL

You think we actually have enough talent to bring Headley and Garza. Keep dreaming homer.

I think we wont make a move till late August when more teams are out of the race.

Omar looked solid at 2B in the 9th inning tonight and almost made a diving stop on a Damon single through the infield. Excellent defensive addition and he gave the other fielders the out sign and played his position well in limited time on the field tonight. As Buck said on the radio the other morning we have to get better defensively and Omar will take care of 2B. Now we just need to add Headley for 3B and we will be getting back on track defensively. Davis is playing well in LF but I would still like to obtain Bourjos from the Angels. He would make our outfield defense as good as any team in baseball.

    • He only threw a 55% of his pitches for strikes and only missed 6 bats but yet he only let up 5 base runners. Odd start. Wasn’t really good but it didn’t hurt him either.
    • Oh, and Kremer hit 97, a good sign.
    • Agree. Kremer deserved better. Oh well, that’s baseball.
    • I’m guessing:  1. Gunnar - SS 2. Adley - DH 3. Mountcastle - 1B 4. Santander - RF 5. Westburg - 3B 6. Mullins - CF 7. Hays - LF 8. Urias - 2B 9. McCann - C Hyde may flip Hays and Mullins for righty/lefty reasons.
    • 2. The Other Baby Birds We get it, Orioles: You’ve got talent. Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson, and Jackson Holliday are consensus top prospects from three consecutive years, which is ridiculous when you stop and think about it. They’re slam dunk great hitters, all of them. They even have the same flowing golden locks and questionable facial hair choices. (In Henderson’s defense, his mustache is allegedly only still around because he broke out when shaving it off.) The future of the Orioles is a great baseball club that looks like a prep school lacrosse team. Plot twist: Those guys have been a mixed bag so far this year. Henderson is mashing, to the tune of a 171 wRC+, but Rutschman hasn’t found his power stroke yet; he checks in at a disappointing 106 wRC+. Holliday got a late start, and he’s still searching for his first extra-base hit. In aggregate, the three have put up a 110 wRC+, not what you’d hope for from a trio of franchise saviors. Not to worry, though. The other prospects the Orioles have amassed in recent years are more than picking up the slack. Michael Baumann — our Michael Baumann, not Baltimore’s — already covered Colton Cowser’s hot start, with the 250 wRC+ and homers to parts of the stadium that no one was even sure existed. But that might undersell how outrageously fun his start has been. The nicknames are coming in hot and heavy. Fans are already calling him “The Milkman.” The Camden Yards faithful moo every time he comes to the plate. “They’re not booing, they’re saying (word)” is a pretty common sports trope, but “They’re not booing, they’re mooing” is definitely a new one for me. Cow masks at the stadium are just par for the course now: Cowser might be turning fans into cow people, but another O’s youngster is breaking out just as much at the same time. Jordan Westburg isn’t a rookie – he played half a season last year and looked like a steady contributor. He’s off to nearly as hot of a start as Cowser, though, and he’s doing it in huge spots. He keeps coming up with runners on base, and he keeps racking up extra bases and RBI. Is his start sustainable? Probably not. It’s hard to run a .349 BABIP, hard to have as many extra-base hits as singles, hard to barrel 12.5% of your batted balls and make hard contact 62.5% of the time without huge raw power. But his approach looks legit, and it’s not like he’s hitting those doubles and home runs by accident. He has a solid approach and a fly ball swing. The stadium isn’t a plus for him given the bite out of the left field fence, but he looks like a nice everyday contributor at worst, and I’m willing to dream on a little more than that. He can also handle second and third defensively, which suits Baltimore’s roster quite well. That doesn’t even mention Coby Mayo and Heston Kjerstad, who are absolutely annihilating Triple-A at the moment. Connor Norby and Kyle Stowers have started hot. Yes, the O’s are headlined by their flaxen-haired top trio, but there are more reinforcements waiting in the wings, and the other birds are helping to drive the offense right now. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/five-things-i-liked-or-didnt-like-this-week-april-19/
    • Kremer pitched well. Not super dominant or anything but well enough to win the game. If Akin gets the third out, he leaves with 5.2 IP and 1 ER and nobody would complain. He was in the zone all night and did well to get a huge out on Perez after the blown call on the Witt walk.
    • Also, the 3-2 pitch to Witt that was called ball four for the first walk had been called a strike all night.  In fact, far worse pitches had been called strikes, especially for the Royals’ pitchers.   And were called strikes afterwards.
