Bundy Moving Up?

From what I heard at the beginning of the year, the plan all along was to give him 8-10 starts at Delmarva and then 8-10 starts at Frederick before pushing him to finish out the year in Bowie. I see no reason that this is still not the plan.

Did they know he would wreck both SAL and CAR? Or at least, strongly suspect?

That's a pretty aggressive promotion schedule. Though it seems as though he's right on top of it. :)

I am sure they knew that the SAL league wasn't going to be a challenge.

Is he going to stay on the 6 man rotation in Bowie?

I think everyone involved know they have something special in Bundy. It is very aggressive for a first year high school player, but that was the plan and he's proven them to be right.

I wasn't entirely sure of the plan that they had laid out for him. My apologies if I just said the obvious, just passing along the information I received. lol

Oh, my comment was not intended to be snarky toward you. I appreciate the info. I simply meant that this information, if true, should serve to reinforce the idea that Baltimore had a solid, informed plan laid out for Bundy and they have carried it out. Many fans on and off this board complained vocally when Bundy was dominating the Sally League in April, however I'd say the plan went off exactly as anticipated. Bundy experienced resounding success in Delmarva while getting his feet wet in pro ball, moved to A+ Frederick where he was successful but not dominant, and (presumably) earned himself a late-season promotion to AA.

I don't know why a sub-3.00 ERA with almost a 4:1 K/BB ratio is viewed as anything other than dominant unless you're comparing it to his Delmarva performance.

Thanks for the info. Sounds possible to me. If he has a few starts at AA this year and does well, I don't think it is out of the realm of possibilities that we see him in Baltimore in September.

I wish people would stop saying this. It is a horrible idea. Bundy will have plenty of innings by the end of August, and he is not ready to face major league hitters. He hasn't even been that consistent in the Carolina League. I'm okay with pushing him to Bowie this year, but even that is stretching it and they shouldn't stretch any further.

I'm with you, but what if he was allowed to use his best pitch? It's conceivable he could be ready to face major leaguers out of the pen then, no?

In terms of pure talent, I think he could certainly be effective in short stints. But the important thing is how many innings he'd pitch in his first pro season, and the potential stress on his arm that that would cause, and perhaps diminished effectiveness as well.

Bundy has now pitched 30 innings at Delmarva and 42 and 1/3 at Frederick. If he gets one more 5 inning A+ start that will put him at 77-78 innings. With a target of 125-130, he'll have around 50 more innings to pitch at AA. If he could get 8 starts there averaging 6 innings per start (another 48 innings) he'd be right in line with "the plan." I doubt they deviate and give him more at the major league level this season.

But, leaving it opens gives Bundy something to aim for, even if they have no intention of doing it. So they can make vague comments about the end of the season right up to the point they shut him down, as far as I'm concerned.

Lefties are batting .313 against him at Frederick. he needs to improve on getting them out. A better and more consistent change up would be a start.

Tony, does he throw a cutter that can bore into left handed hitters? If so, how often is he throwing that cutter?

Apparently his cutter is his best pitch but he's not allowed to throw it. Could certainly help in that regard when he's allowed to unleash it again.

Is this still the case? I know it was mentioned early on, but does anyone know if the Orioles are still restricting the pitch? I've seen it repeated around here a number of times, but haven't actually seen any official source.
