Decisions, decisions....

Okay, this started out to be a far more reactionary thread about BS and his poor managing because of decisions he made in tonights game, but lets just keep it to that. Or not. To me, it was inexcusable to bring in a kid you just brought up in that situation, but then to leave him in when it was clear he had nothing? It was clear, right? I would have pulled him after the first walk. Well, that presupposes that I put him in to begin with. Ugh....

I want to rant about other things that bug me about Buck, but I know he's also working with a limited talent pool. The lineup for instance is not how I see it benefitting us the most, but I know many of the posters have said he really doesn't have many choices.

After his contract is up do you want him back? Do you think Buck deserves an extension? I don't think playing .500 ball is a great accomplishment. If he gets us to the playoffs that gets him some time. If he doesn't next year I think PA has a decision.

You're joking, right? I hated Buck's decision to let Betemit bat right-handed with the bases loaded, but every manager makes bad decisions at times. Buck has done a great job this year overall, he ought to be a manager of the year candidate IMO.

I'd be somewhere between "Clueless Gimp" and "Manager of the Year" I think.

Why? Because the team is 4 games over .500 with 62 games left? This team has been held together with duct tape. It's smoke and mirrors.

Which is why the manager deserves a lot of credit. The team has outperformed its talent.

Really? Times 1000? Because nobody else in the AL has done a good job this year except Buck? Gimme a break. How bout the guy in the opposing dugout tonight? Anybody expect the A's to be where they are right now? How about Ventura with the WSox? Is he maybe a candidate? Or does Buck out perform him and everybody else according to you by 1000?

Buck has done alright, I'm not asking for his firing. However, lets not start with the hyperbole either.

Funny. Sure did sound like you were. Buck has taken a team that was picked universally to finish last in the AL East. July 27, 2012, they are in 2nd place, 4 games over .500. Playing the toughest schedule in the league, or at least in the top 2 or 3 all year (depending on when you look at their schedule), having lost their best starting pitcher, having sent 3/5 of their opening day starting staff to the minors, and YET he has his team where they are. Yeah. I'm sorry. I'm thinking another manager would do no better, and could do much worse. Quite frankly, we are lucky to have him in the depths of where this franchise was when he took over. I respect your opinion. But it's fairly reactionary.

    • Friedman and Dombrowski set a high bar, and the Astros are post peak.    Atlanta probably doesn't want to hear much about the Orioles misfortune. The Orioles level of play has been in the toilet half a season but I still think the good version of themselves is the AL's best positioned team to outplay the NL's best even this year.     We'll see if Soto and Judge are more than a 1-year thing, but even so that club has vulnerabilities.
    • I agree it's unlikely but not completely far fetched. I don't think he is a lock to get more than $20M in AAV, so he could decide to take it and then hit FA if he has a good or even better year. His talent level is in a similar range as the players who have accepted: Joc Pederson, Jose Abreu, Wieters etc.
    • Sort of a funny game to have come directly after a discussion of the merits of bunting with 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Glad Bob Melvin and I don’t see eye to eye on that issue…didn’t work out in his favor today.
    • Let's be honest, Gunnar ain't finishing second either.
    • Yeah, I don't think the Orioles' struggles against NL teams is very meaningful, but I do think the NL is stronger this year.  All the NL division leaders have looked formidable and steady throughout the season.  But also the Padres and Mets have kicked their seasons into another gear and have really impressed over the past couple of months.  Compare them to the Wild Card teams in the AL, and they just appear more formidable on paper.   Also the DBacks are pretty much outhitting everyone right now -- though that's been offset by their not so effective pitching.
    • For sure he is out of consideration as the MVP favorite to copy Cal.  Of course,  Cal didn't have an Aaron Judge to compete with.  The runner-up in MVP voting in 1983 was a guy named Eddie Murray.  Eddie had more HR, more RBI, a higher slugging and OPS than Cal, but Cal had a higher WAR and batting average (.318 to .303).  I wonder if Eddie is bitter about losing the MVP to Cal?  A case could be made for either one.
