Plays plus defense at a position that has been brutal for us all year, and has a career .299/.366/.449 away from Petco

Crap. Doesn't mean I'd do Matusz AND Britton, just saying let's not knock Headley

I think it's really hard for people to put the pieces together and get a proper valuation. :)

The Athletics, Orioles, Pirates and Indians are pursuing Chase Headley most aggressively, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark reports. The Pirates and Indians seem less motivated to complete a deal now, but the A’s and Orioles haven’t backed off. The Diamondbacks, Phillies and Yankees checked in on Headley

Go O's!!!!!!!

I feel better about Zach Britton than I do about:

a. Socolovich who has sucked against major league hitters

b. The manager that left Socolovich in to face major league hitters.

c. The manager that left Betemit in to face a left handed pitcher with the bases loaded and two outs.

d. The GM that left us with a three man bench with no righthanded pinch hitting option.

Exactly.

He has shoulder issues. Other than that, he's good.

Is there evidence they're lingering? His command was spotty, but his stuff looked pretty good to me (though he lost his release point a few times and overthrew a few times).

The roster really is a mess. I give Duquette a partial pass in that he didn't really have an off season to build a roster, most of the talent in our minor leagues started the season at AA and below, and we weren't expected to contend so who knew it would matter? But we are contending, so playing a career infielder in left field has hurt us. Playing a switch hitter that can't hit left-handed pitching at 3B has hurt us. Having a three man bench with two lefties and a catcher has hurt us. Having to carry 8 pitchers because starters haven't been able to consistently go deep into games has hurt us.

In my perfect world we would trade Matusz or Arrieta, Avery or Hoes, and a third player or the tradeable pick for Headley - I think he will do very well if he moves out of that park. Then cut Reynolds - he's a sunk cost that can't hit for average or power, doesn't get on base enough to make up for it and won't be part of our future. Finally, move Davis back to 1B and bring up a real outfielder to play in left. If Avery or Hoes goes in the trade, bring the other up. Then promote Tolleson so you have at least one right handed bat on the bench (given, it isn't a particularly good one, but it's better than watching the Meat flail at left-handed pitching).

Headley is being undervalued on OH. If DD can obtain him Buck will be able to plug him in at 3B full time and solve one defensive problem and then he can turn to LF and try to obtain a LF who plays the position. Fill the wholes defensively and we will increase our odds of winnng close games and stretching our starters.

I have a feeling we will get a announcement after the game. I have my fingers crossed.

I hope you are right. DD and Minaya shoud be locked in a room tonight until the deal is done. Tom Davis comes on WBAL radio late after TV that just ended and he should be on until 12:30 or later.Would we have won the game tonight with a speedy LF and better 3B? Why does Betemit continue to stand at the plate and look at strike three?

    • Westburg’s whiff rate is high but his strikeout rate is only 18% so it looks like he has a better approach with two strikes. Cowser has a beautiful swing but it’s like he tries to keep it level on low pitches instead of using the Tony Taters approach of letting the bat head go into golf mode.
    • Just a statement of how good this lineup is. Cowser will have a lot of RBI opportunities. With all the “starters” starting and Adley at Catcher, our 6-7-8-9 is Cowser, Mullins, Westburg, and Holliday.  Also, the league is tough and I’m sure they will adjust to whatever has been working for Cowser so far.
    • By saying he is no Machado do you mean after he catches the ball he does not read the label on the ball and gun the throw to first?
    • A small run of guys maybe around Povich's general level are having MLB debuts around now, in some instances as injury fill-ins - HOU Spencer Arrighetti, CHW Nick Nastrini, TEX Jack Leiter just announced. High above, PIT Paul Skenes could be any day now, unless he needs to work on the Super 2 stuff as well. Roster Resource actually has Pittsburgh momentarily on a 9-man bullpen, and nobody listed for Friday night when they open a home series with the Red Sox.    Hmmm....
    • Cowser got a steady diet of breaking balls just under the zone last night, he was pitched to pretty well. He’s got a great eye for pitches off the plate and seems like he can cover the top of the zone well enough (although he has some whiff there too), but he looked pretty helpless on the low breaking pitches over the plate. Cowser and Westburg have very similar Statcast pages in that it’s a lot of red, they are clobbering the ball, but then have quite poor whiff rates. It’s a great development for both of them that they’re tapping into power that neither displayed at the MLB level last year, but there’s there’s going to still be some ups and downs with both of them of adjustments and counter adjustments to their scouting reports and opposing pitchers’ gameplans. I expect that both are going to settle in as above average hitters that capitalize on hitting mistakes, but have some clear holes in their game that can be consistently exploited when the pitcher executes.
    • Funny how it works out when Guys like Elias and his front office Know more than us( you're pick Givens ,not so much) Frazier yes , Ohearn in Spades
    • Elias is so good at scouting every position except second base.
