4-32 revisited

Remember when the Orioles finished the '02 season with a 4-32 record? It was an unfathomably bad stretch of baseball, the kind of futility I wasn't sure we'd see again anytime soon.

Well folks, we're one game away from it happening again. The Houston Astros are 4-31 in their last 35 games.

They had a lousy-but-not-putrid 32-43 record on June 27. The next day they began a 9-game losing streak. They won a game, lost four more, won again, and then rattled off a 12-game skid. A win. Four more losses. A win. And now two losses in a row, including a horrible defensive play last night to lose a game to the Nats in extras. Their record now stands at 36-74. They've won only 4 games in July and August combined.

Tonight the Astros host the Nationals, putting Jordan Lyles (2-8, 5.95) up against Ross Detwiler (6-4, 3.02). Can they match the '02 Orioles' stretch of futility?

Wow.

It really is amazing how bad a team has to be to put together a stretch that bad.

It kind of gets lost in a losing season...I mean the Astros were already 11 games under when they went on the slide. But the O's in 2002 were at .500. They had actually battled back from a few games below .500 to get there.

Then they threw it all away.

The team with the best record in baseball beat the team with the worst record. 4-32 and counting for the 'Stros.

Davey Johnson, finished a wire-to-wire first place run in 1997 and had the audacity *gasp* to publicly request an extension. Angelos would have none of it and Davey was gone. Fast forward to 2001. Angelos decides to add another year to Hargrove's contract. The team responds the following year with a 4-32 finish. Yes, folks, another chapter in great moments in Angelos' Orioles tenure.

They are now at 4-34, so they have left the Orioles' 4-32 stretch in the dust.

They have matched the worst stretch in baseball since the 1949 Senators went 4-34. If they lose tomorrow, they will surpass those Senators and match the 1916 As who went 4-35.
