O's are dealing with a "physical issue" on team that could lead to DL move

My problem with this plan is that it theoretically will allow the 'rich' teams to stock up on even more established, expensive talent. I think 25 is a fine number, and when managed properly, is not a hindrance. Using the AAA team in exactly the manner Duguette has been this year, essentially eliminates the problem anyway.

If anything, just eliminate (or shorten) the 10-day period between going down and coming back up. This would put even more value on younger, 'under team control' players with options, theoretically. W/O players of that ilk, the shuffling we are talking about can't happen anyway (hence the loss of a guy like Pearce, or Bergesen).

You could also increase the 40 man roster by a few players to help w/ this I suppose....

I understand your point and certainly think it is a possibility. I still think "quality" free agents want to play regularly and not ride the pines. I believe the O's frequently sign guys looking for one last payday and play accordingly.

I really think September ball is stupid with the extreme expanded rosters....bringing them up is OK, but teams should not be able to dress them all for a given game. It looks more like Spring Training than pennant race baseball.

It's about time for MLB to allow expanded rosters of 28. Teams could dress only 25 for a given game. For teams that have a serious injury they could call up someone immediately, for a short term injury like flu, broken fingernail not. This up and down seems ridiculous, especially for the player going back and forth. I believe a lot of "injuries" suddenly crop up based on overused bp and lack of quality starts. I think it would create a better game and more moves within a game, at a minimal cost.

I've always felt that rosters should expand in relation to a teams prior W/L record, with the weakest teams having as much as 30 and the playoff teams set at 25. This would be one way to move towards parity.

Usually the weakest teams can field a competitive 25 man roster, nonetheless a 30 man roster.

Maybe the Orioles are confident they will win Fri and sun, and are fine with a pitcher that's a sure loss.

This kind of statement is a pet peeve of mine. There's no pitcher in baseball who is "a sure loss." The Orioles are 2-3 in Britton's starts this year. I'm not saying he's pitching well or that he should make Saturday's start, but you can never just concede a game based on who's the starting pitcher.

Exactly, Weaver lost at home the other night. Last year Verlander was as automatic as a pitcher can be and the O's beat him.

Hurts to lose Patton, if that's confirmed, but still better him than a SP.

It's so strange for a professional athlete to turn his ankle in a parking garage that he's in very frequently. I can't help but think it was a night out of drinking before an off day...especially given his past alcohol issues. I really hope this isn't the case.

Doubtful. The report said it occurred after Sunday's game.

JMO, I think Steve Johnson gets the call. He can start Saturday. It's close enough to his day. Come up tomorrow and be the emergency long man for a couple days. If he gets used you bring up Britton. If he doesn't get used Johnson starts. This DL is the ONLY way Johnson is eligible to start Saturday.

So I was right in the first place. :P

That's why he is in parenthesis....just used him as an example of players in the minors earning major league salary. I thought the parenthesis would be an indicator, apparently not.

No, no. I thought maybe that was the case and Corn is right, he was making Eveland money. Which we recouped some of when we sent him west.

    • So since Westburg is apparently still ROY eligible, Cowser and Westburg may project to be the best rookie combination since Fred Lynn and Jim Rice in 1975?
    • There were several and I was one them. I'm  on record as saying I was one of his biggest Apologists . You should feel good about yourself as you were able to see that Means would be imploding before our very eyes( which was an opinion or a guess, which is what I did) as far as feeling bad for me? Dont I'm plenty good enough to know I wont be able to guess right every time
    • Fantastic pickup by Elias and big kudos to O’Hearn for taking advantage of the resources to improve. He’s a great story.
    • Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.    ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.
    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
