He decided against it in the first minute.

Do you have proof of this?

Pie is represented by the agency that Peace's guy represents...So, he may be hearing some first hand info.

You may be right Dave...I am not trying to say you are dead wrong. I just think you are basing it more on hope....not that I blame you.

Again, not arguing, just curious. Why is it that the Orioles wouldn't do it? He has an amazing arm right? He takes great jumps on the ball from what Ive seen...right? Is it like the "can't move Cal from short" thing, or am I missing something? Thanks Sports Guy.

Something tells me it would be more like a "Cal's too big for short" thing.

The Orioles feel Markakis hits better in RF(at least they did entering last year)...I think they just have the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality with Nick and he ain't going anywhere.

Wow, excellent news about Haren. Not only does that put pressure on the Dodgers, but it's one fewer option for the Reds and Mariners. (not sure the M's had a shot being in the same division, but the Reds were definitely interested.)

Agree...Good thing is the DBacks were never really in on Bedard, so this works out well for us.

Ethier-Markakis-Scott left to right (Scott's arm is better than Ethier's) would not be terrible defensively. I don't see why people are freaking out about it. Would you prefer a better CF? Sure, especially when the O's want defense up the middle, but they have to get some bats.

Agree 100%. In Dave and any Cubs fans mind, dealing Pie in a Roberts deal would be stupid.

Therefore, they just assume there is no way their GM would do something they consider to be that dumb.

I'm sure they felt Hendry wouldn't be dumb enough to trade for Steve Trachsel too. ;)

Gotcha. Thanks. If I were the O's I would just take the packages that give us the best young talent in return, and then let it work itself out in the Spring or something, I am no baseball guru, trust me. I just think thats what I would do, and If that means moving Markakis then I would. I think entering his 3rd season in the league, I doubt a player of his caliber would have a mental issue such as that. I know my argument is filled with holes, but thats just my personal feelings. :o

You mean they both died in a freak accident?

So there's only no chance if they are dead? I don't agree with this logic -- what's saying they can't be traded while dead? If you want to add a tenth of a percentage point to the chances for the sake of the optimistic "anything can happen," then be my guest but I guarantee you it doesn't happen.

So the Cubs somewhat overrate Pie while the O's somewhat overrate Roberts and thusfar underrate Gallagher. It's useless and ineffectual to debate who is exaggerating their players' worth more -- the Cubs aren't trading Pie&Gallagher and so far have not budged at all in their refusal to use Pie in any trade. They'd absolutely need a CF back for it to even move into the realm of possibility; and Jay Payton isn't cutting it close. Does this mean Roberts isn't traded? Yes, it very well could mean that. The Cubs however aren't at all desperate for him and aren't in a position of need so no amount of stubborn demanding of their prime chips is going to work. They'd much better allocate those resources to an upgrade at shortstop with a guy like Khalil Greene anyway.

According to some googling I'm able to do here at work, Loo is currently retired, but the Reds control him for the next 4 years.

He's apparently very athletic & injury prone.

I can't believe the Reds are trying to peddle off some retired 20 year old on us. What a pile of s***, i'd be so done with them trying to low ball us. Im seriously mad, I shouldnt be maybe, but I am. Thats an insult.

However, apparently Hendry really wants Roberts. Will he give up Pie? Well, if you or Dave were him, then no, you wouldn't. Hell, if I was the Cubs GM, I wouldn't either (actually, I would, because if I were the Cubs GM dealing with the O's I'd totally be corrupt and trying to help the O's).

But Hendry and Lou are all that count, and I'm just not sure those two wouldnt rather have Roberts than Pie.

But I am sure. I'm not saying it's just what I feel. I'm not assuming Hendry wouldn't trade Pie - I'm basing this off very good information. There would be some consideration if it were straight up but the O's wouldn't let that happen anyway. Hendry is not trading Hill nor Pie.

    • There’s a good chance McCann starts game one with Burnes. Big roster. We can always move Adley from DH to C late in the game. Lose the DH, but have a big enough bench to just pinch hit and double switch to hide the pitcher’s spot coming up.  So really we’d only be sacrificing 2 ABs from O’Hearn/Mounty/Kjerstad but we get Burnes throwing to his boy every pitch.
    • We would have lost last night regardless due to zero runs scored by the offense. It is worrisome that Cano looked awful in back to back games. After talk about arm soreness. He has been the one reliable guy. Once we fell behind I don't really care how bad Bowman and Baker are. Hopefully they don't even make the roster for the playoffs.
    • Don’t sleep on Povich getting a chance to eliminate the team that traded him away. That kind of stuff matters. The little extra…
    • I do worry about the McCann start although he has been hitting lately, so maybe you can justify it.
    • It’s the 7th inning with Burnes or Eflin on the bump. A tough lefty is coming up. Who you bringing in?  Perez or Coloumbe?
    • My thoughts: - I agree that the Achilles heel is the bullpen and not the offense (especially with Westburg, Mountcastle, Urias, and Kjerstad back). - I also agree that Perez is overused in high leverage situations. This is going to come down to the degree you expect his “clutch” performance to be predictive going forward.  - I second the notion that most good bullpens are built with some degree of dumpster diving.  If you go back to offseason threads, there were not many desired bullpen FA targets (outside of unrealistic ones like Hader) that would have worked out well.  Maybe we haven’t “dumpster dived” well enough as evidenced by the success of Kaleb Ort in Houston. - Jacob Webb hasn’t been sharp since returning from the IL and Bowman has looked shaky his last few times out. - We don’t have a true closer, only a group of mostly effective set-up men in Dominguez, Cano, and Coulombe. - Part of me wishes they would be more aggressive with G-Rod and the Mountain. While we expect the team to continue to contend, you never really know how many times you’ll be back in the playoffs. However, I know in my head they are probably making the right decision. - I also feel like they should be auditioning McDermot, Selby, Young, or Strowd (who has been very good since August after rough Norfolk start). They could option Baker who I think is unlikely to have a path to trusted status after last year’s ALDS performance. This feeling may be mostly driven by dissatisfaction with the current state and wanting something better.  It might be unrealistic to expect options unproven at the MLB level to suddenly step in and be key playoff pieces.
    • Oh if we’re talking about what they will do, I can see it being something stupid like McCann at C and Adley at DH. I do think Mullins has enough veteranosity to outweigh Hyde’s obsession with L/R matchups.
