Bobby Valentine was asked today by ESPN why the O's have been so good despite their negative run differential. His response?

"Lucky."

The rest of his speech was about as eloquent as you would expect. We truly dodged a train destined to derail with this guy. Good lord, what a loser. 20-2. Guess the the A's were lucky eh?

The only time run differential really matters is in the game you're currently playing. So Bobby V - the soon-to-be-unemployed-again Bobby V - can continue sucking whatever happens to be handy.

[Edit: For example, 20-2 really matters.]

How 'bout dem Lucky O's! Sounds like a good theme for 2012.

This is probably one of the best ideas I've heard in awhile. Turn it around on the baseball "establishment" - the rich jerks of the baseball world, the mainstream press guys. It strikes the perfect balance between mocking the haters... and wide-eyed embracing of whatever divine providence happens to be flowing in this team's direction.

I thought this thread was because he was fired.:

I thought do, too. Fortunately, I was mistaken.

Bobby is lucky they decimated his team and completely disenfranchised the Pink Hat nation in order to let him keep his job.

Bobby V owes his job to the Orioles. If the "lucky" O's hadn't destroyed the Red Sox last September, Francona would still be there.

I'd like to see the actual interview, though, to see exactly what Bobby V said. I doubt all he said was "lucky."

I was so hoping when I saw the thread title that the little arse got fired late last night. Regardless, you don't get lucky 73 times in five months unless you look like Brad Pitt. With Machado's ears, Johnson's pornstache, a name like Taylor Teagarden, and the fact our starting leftfielder looks remarkably like Lowell the mechanic from the 90's sitcom Wings, we aren't exactly a bunch of Brad Pitts. Buck's response was dead on. The team has fought hard, stepped up, adapted on the fly, and deserves to be where it is.

:rolleyes:Hard to imagine why people don't like Bobby V. I mean, he has such a way with words.

Amazing that he would say, "Your not good when you have that kind of differential." I can't remember any manager ever saying something like that about another ball club.

One, you're talking about Thomas Haden Church, who has become a pretty respectable character actor...Wings was a weird stomping ground for that type with him AND Tony Shaloub. And I don't think McClouth looks like Church, but hey, I can see why you do. :)

Two, this Brad Pitt?

You gotta start somewhere. The 2012 Orioles can very well be that Brad Pitt. :D

As we did when Joe Girardi turned us down, also.

All of the Yankee fans that I know despise Girardi, and know that we have the better manager by leaps and bounds.

    • I'm not saying the bolded is impossible. But what are the odds of that happening for the rest of this season, even if he were to be called up tomorrow? I'm not sure how much value Moutcastle would have (even if he continues to have a very good season) to a team who is rebuilding/reseting/tanking/whatever you want to call it. Mountcastle would seem to have more value to a team who is trying to win and needs offensive production at 1B/DH. And if they are already trying to win, what pitching are they willing to depart with. The only team I can think of that may fit this mold is SEA. IMO that's way too much to give up for a relief pitcher, considering that we only need a good middle reliever. We don't need Emmanuel Clase for the rest of this season. It looks like Kimbrel will do. And then next year Felix will be coming back.
    • I think Elias' MO is always going to be to squeeze the max potential value out of every asset. If Kjerstad isn't playing well enough to wrest away more than 10 ABs/week from the other players on the roster, then I don't think he stays up. Especially when he'd be tying up a bench spot with a player who can really only play one position in the field. He's going to have to earn a bigger time share to justify his spot.
    • Well, he either shows something or he doesn't. I don't think he's going anywhere until he shows something.
    • Means starting tonight for Norfolk. Hopefully he puts some length in his start tonight. Probably his next to last minor league start if they do bring him back up.
    • I'm not saying that id not possible, but it is certainly not probable. Given the talent gap between Carter and Norby. Again, IMO the greater odds/gain is that Norby is a useful piece in a trade than him becoming the next Evan Carter.
    • That sequence showed why Mateo is on the team. There are much worse things than having him in the 9 spot here and there versus LHP. And when he’s not, he can pinch run and do the exact same thing. It’s why when push comes to shove, and it will soon, it’s Urias’ head on the chopping block and not Jorge’s.    We all know this, but it’s nice to see it demonstrated on the field here and there as a reminder.
    • We could really use Cease too. The WS had a lineup the other day and I believe everyone or at least 8 guys had a sub 200 BA.
