Look's like the O's will get No help from the Redsox tonight.

After the on field ceremony on Saturday, the cars that the statue players were riding in all pulled in front of the Red Sox dugout while they were waiting Brooks to throw out the first pitch. I noticed that Valentine made a point to go over and shake Earl's hand and talk to him for a few minutes, which almost makes me think he's an OK guy. At the same time, Cal was talking to Pedroia and Ellsbury. Not sure what I thought about that.

They're all members of a very exclusive fraternity it takes exceptional talent and determination not only to join, but to keep your membership from day to day. Their day-to-day lives as professionals are beyond the understanding of anyone except them. (Think also of what amounts to constant touring, in front of crowds large and small, with the possibility that anything you do, very good, or very bad, will be on nationwide television the same day.)

I think the fraternization is only normal, and probably happens a lot more than we know during the off-season when they have free time and are out of the public eye.

Any truth that Bobby V has inserted himself into the line-up for tonight ?

If he does, it could help them win the game.

Valentine bats lead-off. In the top of the first inning, the David Phelps intentionally throws a fastball at him, breaking his arm. Valentine needs to go to the hospital to treat his fractured ulna, somebody else manages the team for the rest of the game, a pinch-runner enters the game to replace the injured Valentine, and the Red Sox start the game with a runner on first base with nobody out.

So, Valentine plays his AA roster vs. the Yankees in a series that has division winning implications for the Sox mortal enemies. Totally bush league on his part. He no longer deserves to be a manager at the Major League level.

The opposite of what Buck would do. But Valentine's no nugget.

In fairness, a "AA" Boston team didn't give up 9 runs to NY in the 2nd inning; that gets hung on Bucholz (who was 11-7 coming into the game) and Aceves.

As for the Orioles, they had their shot in the 9th with 2 on and nobody out. But Thome was flailing away and so was Reynolds for 2 quick outs. The PH Chavez grounds out to Rodney to end the game. Opportunities lost.

Oh yea, they were flailing away and missing opportunities all over the place. Against a guy who's allowed 58 baserunners and 5 earned runs in 74 innings this year. Not everybody can be Kirk Gibson circa October 1988.
