Cubs showing interest in Bedard

Does anybody else get the feeling that after all this speculation about Bedard going to Seattle or Cinci or LA, that he actually ends up going with BRob in a blockbuster to the Cubs. I do. I get the feeling that at the end of the day, McPhail turns to his old pal Hendry and wings a big deal. We'll see.

They don't have enough. The Reds and Mariners are both desperate enough to blow the Cubs out of the water. I'd guess that we've already received offers from both teams that are better than what the Cubs could possibly offer.

I don't know. What if the cubs came up with Hill, Pie, Gallagher, Marmol, Theriot, Patterson and Veal? Still don't think the Cubs have enough?

I'm assuming they're not trading Hill. And they're not. (Nor am I a big fan of his, but that's neither here nor there.)

To match an offer of Bailey, Votto and another prospect, they'd have to deal Hill, Pie, Colvin, and Gallagher, which they won't do.

I really think it's between the Reds and Mariners. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. There were rumors about Tejada to the Astros weeks before it happened. Same for Haren and the DBacks.

So you guys are telling me that if the Cubs were to start an offer with the guy that was tops on these lists until he exhausted eligibility (Pie), plus a terrific young fireballer (Marmol), and then added, say, 5 guys from the top ten in each list (make it Colvin, Gallagher, Ceda, Veal, Patterson), and then tossed in a few more young/cheap bigleaguers and recent top-tenners just for good measure (Cedeno and/or Murton, and/or Marshall), you'd turn that down?

Yikes.

You do realize you're talking about an 8 for 1 swap. I might turn that down, but only because I don't know where we'd put all those players, not because they don't add up to a theoretically good package.

The fact is, the Cubs don't have the Baileys, Vottos, or Jones' or even Clements. Pie is the closest, but he's a step below those guys. The M's and Reds would be sending us 2 guys better than the best guy the Cubs could send us. Adding an absurd number of players, solid as they may be, does not a good trade make.

It's 8 for 2 (that's for Bedard and Roberts), with 3 of the 8 not needing to go on your 40-Man.

So you'd need to open up 3 roster spots.

I wouldn't call it absurd after what we just saw happen with Haren.

    • We don't know what constraints the new owner has put on him.
    • Wow that's really bad about not winning series. Also you said the offense has been a little bit better?  My goodness how bad was it prior that this enimic offense has been a little bit better then before
    • When I'm tempted to blame the injuries, I remember the hideous stretch of baseball just before the All-Star break where the team scored four runs in five games and went 0-5 against the Cubs and Yankees with a healthy Westburg, Mountcastle, Urias, and Mateo. If not for Alex Verdugo falling down it would have been 0-6 with seven runs in six games. Hell, they even had midseason Austin Hays to match up with instead of Slater. Maybe this is what they always were.
    • I hear you. Like I said prior to Rubenstein I don't think Elias can be graded responsibly because JA handcuffed him but moving forward with DR as owner he deservedly so will be graded accordingly if he continues his conservative ways and bringing in only fringe guys and we have more seasons like this.
    • I would bet the Giants were thrilled he made that move. Why? they were in a good spot either way. Has the hitting become so bad that were giving out merit badges for balls that are hard hit? Holliday wa just as eligible to fall on his ass there.
    • I'm not sure who's saying that Adley was disappointing in his first season; I didn't say that. I just said he struggled badly for 20 games. It's just one data point in a pattern.  People think top prospects should crush the ball like Juan Soto did as soon as they hit the majors.  Sometimes that happens but it's got to be pretty rare, maybe even rarer today than in years past. This also seems directed at someone else, it doesn't have anything to do with what I wrote. My own personal opinion about Holliday and Mayo is that they aren't quite ready.  They're on the Orioles really because of injuries to other players.  Holliday especially has way too much in the way of expectations on his shoulders.  These guys need some more time.   No argument on Holliday, the results clearly tell us he wasn't ready. Mayo I think is falling into the trap of needing consistent PT to get adjusted to the point where he's at least contributing something, and not getting it because the O's can't afford a black hole in the lineup right now. It becomes something of a vicious circle.
    • I don't think it was giving up the at-bat at all.  Holliday has finally started hitting balls hard again and Slater has looked pretty lost of late.  It was Hyde robotically playing the L-R matchup rather than having a feel for how the game was playing out.  I would bet the Giants were thrilled he made that move.
