The #Orioles have declined Mark Reynolds' $11 mm option for 2013

If the O's offer arb. he doesnt have a choice. In that case, I doubt Reynolds would get awarded what he wants.

I understand that. Part of the point I was agreeing to was that the O's (i.e DD paraphrased in this case) might be reluctant to risk paying the 9 mil he could likely get in arbitration and may not be going there.

Oh I agree. I love Mark, and I think the O's being cheap with him, is a bad choice, if it backfires. I expected the option to be declined. But, to not bring him back on a 2/18 with an option would be beyond dumb.

Beyond dumb? This is a guy who's been maybe one win over two years. You're so confident in his defense at first that you're willing to bet his overall production quadruples over the next two years?

I like Reynolds, he's an interesting player, apparently a good teammate. But I find it difficult to project him to two wins a year when (outside of 2009) he's struggled to get to one.

This. I think it would be a prudent move to non-tender him. If he wants to come back then you can likely sign him for less. I doubt anyone else will be offering him 9 million. I'd rather we just find a younger and better solution.

Reyonlds earned his keep by providing us the fantastic Complacent Reynolds thread. He further showed his flexibility by singing/performing in the I'm Glad You Came video the O's put together. We need to keep this guy around for his entertainment purposes alone! He appears to be addicted to Sun Flower seeds perhaps we can get him at a reduced salary if we offer to chip in a life time supply of Sun Flower Seeds.

this should probably do it.

I'm actually surprised that this happened. I know that the O's weren't losing Reynolds if they didn't pick up his option, but I thought that they would just pick it up and know that they have him for next year.

That, however, is a move that Andy MacPhail would make. Apparently not Dan Duquette. I'm fine with this, and I trust Duqutte. I still would be shocked if the O's open their season next year with anyone other then Reynolds on first.

I actually wouldn't be completely shocked to see them sign him to a 2-3 year deal.

Why? They can almost assuredly get him for less than 11 mil even with the buyout included.

His move to 1B makes this tricky. If you believe (as most here do) that Reynolds is an above average defensive 1B, then his past WAR totals while playing a very bad 3B don't tell you much. At the same time, his offensive production compared to other 1B is not as valuable as his previous offensive production compared to other 3B, so that doesn't carry over, either. Plus, his offensive production last year and this year were fairly different. So, I guess I have to ask, how many WAR is an .800ish OPS with above average defense at 1B worth? And how confident are you that he will produce that?

I think in a good year, Reynolds could be worth 3-3.5 WAR. In a bad one, he's worth close to 0.

What do you think the final outcome is?

He made 7.5 mil last year, so I think the estimate of 9 mil (maximum) in arb is about right. I think he'll be non-tendered and offered less. I could see them making a 1/7 or 1/8 deal.

Well stated....

Mark Reynolds wants to stay with O's but says, "If they non-tender me it wouldn't be very smart of me to not see what else is out there."

I think they tender him, but try to get a 2 year deal worked out.

I heard DD say that the 11M option was expensive. I have not heard DD comment on offering Mark 9M. If you have could you point me at the quote?
