Farrell "All in" on Peterson as pitching coach

I'm assuming that Duquette was aware of the biomechanical approach before he hired Peterson and that is was his desire to implement a biomechanical philosophy into the system. He hired Peterson to put his system in place because he wanted to move in the biomechanical direction. I very much doubt that he blindly stumbled across biomechanics when he read a brochure from Peterson.

Of course not. He knew the O's had a big weakness in an area Peterson had a plan that could fix. So he brought in the subject matter expert to fix it.

I know there are many biomechanics programs out there. Is Peterson's the best, or was he the best that was currently available? I really don't know anything about it.

Assuming Duquette continues on this path, will the drop off be significant with someone else?

Hate to lose Rick. He is a big loss if he goes. I think the Orioles pitchers REALLY benefitted from his mechanical tinkering, especially Matusz and Arrieta. I hope they have a better pitching coach in

the wings.

Peterson said he did nearly nothing with Matusz. He did a lot with Arrieta, but we don't really know if it worked. Arrieta did not pitch very well when he returned to the big club.

The guy who really seems to have benefitted was Tillman.

So the guy who wasted 1st round draft choices on Hobgood and Rowell praised Schmidt. Now there is a reference for you.

I'm sorry to have gotten this thread sidetracked. I didn't mean to get into a discussion of whether Schmidt did a good job. Just that we had a minor league pitching coordinator, who seemed to be performing a function that was recognized as valuable by others in the organization.

Not to take this further off track, but the Hobgood pick was far more questionable than the Rowell pick, even though neither has worked out (at least, so far for Hobgood).

I look forward to Frobby starting a "One Year Ago Today, Peterson joined the Red Sox" thread. I hope we continue to prosper, and we can look back on that thread and laugh.

I will be disappointed to lose Peterson. There is probably nobody we could hire who will be able to do things quite the same way that he did. But hopefully our coaches picked up a lot of valuable information working with Peterson this year and we can find a way to use what they learned from working with him.

I guess it boils down to whether he really wants to influence an entire organization from the bottom to the top, or whether he wants to handle ML pitchers. I know the job of ML pitching coach sounds a lot sexier, but if he's as hell bent as getting his philosophy spread through an entire organization, I'd think it would be rather difficult to do that as a ML pitching coach. You simply don't have the time to go down and work with the players who need it throughout the organization. I guess we'll see.

Or, he feels his philosphy, will get more attention, if it's coming from the "sexier" franchise. He's a salesman for is product. People will notice more, if he turns the Red Sox around.

I'd think just the opposite. Which gets you more acclaim, winning LeMans with a 2012 Ferrari, or winning LeMans with a 1984 Chevy Cavalier?

This is what success looks like folks. Our players and coaches and even front office people will get poached.

My question is why? Is it a better job? Are they paying more money? When you have a guy getting credit for helping Matusz become what he become for us when he came back, and Tillman, and really we had a nice change in the staff as a whole this year, why arent you trying everything you can to keep the guy? I hope that if we lose him, someone in the system has been groomed to pick up right were he left off, or there is someone else that we can hire to be a better replacement. Kind of bums me out.

Thats true. Well, maybe it will come down to strictly money. If so, I will be even more upset. If the philosophy is to put money into development, and not stars, id say keeping Peterson falls under player development.

    • Yeah I was thinking this might be good for both the team and Hays. Chance for him to press the reset button if nothing else.
    • Actually, if you think about it, as long as there is a right handed pitcher with this lineup, once Westburg bats, there will always be 8 lefties in a row after that. 🤔
    • Sending Jackson down does nothing, there is nothing left to prove down there. He is taking good ABs, he is working counts, he looks fine in the field etc. I have used the Cowser comp, not to say he should be sent down, in the sense that Cowser looked particularly lost at times during his callup last year. Jackson is facing some professional adversity for the first time as a professional keep running him out there.    The fortunate thing is he isn't hurting the team in a significant way right now, and when it finally does click the Orioles will be just that much better.
    • Actually move Westburg to 7th so there’s not so many lefties in a row.
    • I’ll go with: Gunnar SS Adley C O’Hearn 1B Tony RF Westburg 3B Mullins CF Cowser LF Kjerstad DH Holliday 2B
    • The question is, can he be productive playing just 1-2 times a week? We don't know because he's never really been in that role. Not everyone can stay productive in a part-time role. I think the Orioles will find a way to get him in the lineup 4-5 days a week. He can play corner outfield (except I would not play him in LF in Camden), DH and 1B. He still does not look great at 1B, but he can be serviceable if it means getting his bat into the lineup. That's a decent amount of ways to keep him and others fresh. Santander probably is at risk to sit a bit more than usual, but this also gives the Orioles an opportunity to have a very left-handed heavy lineup against righties at times, with Mountcastle sitting. The Orioles left-handed heavy lineup could be: 1. Henderson - SS 2. Rutschman - C 3. O'Hearn - 1B 4. Santander - RF 5. Cowser - LF 6. Mullins - CF 7. Westburg - 3B (R) 8. Kjerstad - DH 9. Holliday - 2B Imagine having to face that lineup and then have Mountcastle, McCann, Urias and Mateo for pinch running as a bench. Now don't get me wrong, Mountcastle is not going to be benched all that much, but Kjerstad could give Santander, Cowser, Mullins (with Cowser moving to CF), O'Hearn, Mountcastle, and Rutschman when he DHing a day off.  That's a lot of ways to keep him fresh and get his bat in the lineup.
    • If so, probably just for 2 days or so.
