Maryland To Big 10?!?!

I talked to a big time basketball donor at the game yesterday. He saw Kevin Anderson on Wednesday and there was no mention of anything like this. This isn't something you just go ahead and do without talking to the people who give you all the money. Most everyone would hate this. I see little chance of it happening. The ACC is safe now and we don't have the money to get out.

The buyout is 50 million, but the Terps might not have to pay that full amount if it went to court. I believe if they really wanted to go to the Big 10 they would managed to get the money. If something like this is happening, I doubt a big time donor is going to talk about it to anyone. I would think this would be kept as quiet as possible.

Isn't there like a $50 mil buyout or something? I can't imagine Maryland leaving the ACC.

A Penn State message board I follow has a source saying that the $50million doesn't kick in till 2013 that's why it could be happening fairly quickly. Could be as early as Monday of next week with an announcement.

Speculation about an other team seems to center on Rutgers with Maryland which kindof makes sense from a number of TV's watching perspective. Big10 Network would have a lot of new eyeballs for their network.

He would have told me about it... I know him well. He's a family friend.

That said, I will be INFINITELY angry if this happens. No chance I will spend a damn dime to the Terrapin Club if we leave the ACC. I don't give a crap about a single Big 10 team. If I have to watch a Maryland-Minnesota conference game at Comcast, Kevin Anderson is going to get an ANGRY letter from a kid who was born into the University of Maryland.

Seems like there might be something to this. Ultimately, it would still surprise me to see it happen but where there is smoke there is usually some kind of fire. Weird that this just pops up out of nowhere at this time.

This has gone national now. Like I said, there is clearly some smoke here. A lot of it apparently.

Look, I'm as torn as anyone by it. I see the pros and cons. But remember all the talk about how great the Big East was for basketball over the past few years? And all that led to was more defections because college hoops doesn't lead the way. Football does. Just needs to be kept in mind.

Apparently the Board of Regents votes on Monday. I'm still not sure I know how I feel.

This will really tick me off. Great, let's join the Big 10 so we can travel to Nebraska or Michigan or Ohio and get our asses kicked there in football. Instead of bus trips to NC or Virginia, load up the plane and head midwest? It's not worth $20 million let alone $50 million in exit fees to make the move.

    • Kjerstad does not have to play every day for him to be here.  He should be able to start 3+ times a week. He’s hitting right now so I would get him in the lineup immediately and see if there is any carry over from AAA.
    • They needed to replace Hays and he's already on the 40. I don't think it goes much deeper.
    • A lot of people didn’t like this signing.  It was a few bad outings last year but otherwise, he was very good. He will have some bumps in the road but he’s a very capable guy still.
    • I agree. It has to be anticipating Mountcastle being out a little longer, maybe they will IL him too if his knee doesn’t improve quickly. But if Hays is out the minimum 10 days (one of which already passed), maybe Kjerstad gets 3 starts from Mountcastle and 1-2 from rest days for others, available to pinch hit the rest. That wouldn’t be so bad.
    • I trust the O’s and Elias’ handling of him.  Similar to Decosta and the Ravens, they seem to make more good decisions than other clubs do.     I think he can work it out at the major league level if they do.  Wouldn’t be worried if he got sent down to regain some confidence.
    • I don’t see Wells coming back to the rotation. That was never the plan to begin with. Also, I’m not sure it’s a given that Means can make effective starts at the Bug League level right now. He’s been legit terrible against AAA hitters on a pretty consistent basis so far this season. Now Bradish on the other hand, if he can return, he will probably bump one of Suarez or Irvin to the pen (the one who is pitching the worse).  If Suarez keeps performing (I don’t think his current level is realistic to expect) but at a good level for a back end starter, he stays.
    • Remove Bradish and I will maybe agree. To me this guy is destined for the pen, where hopefully his swing and miss stuff plays up even more. Could be an important piece, but I’m not getting my hopes up too far after two appearances.
