The teams you named, don't have the holes the Orioles do, besides the Sox and Yankees. But, they have the money to change that pretty quick. The Ray's will be good, on their pitching alone. I'm reallyt not worried about other teams does as much. I get Valencia is a depth move. I'm not that upset with that. I liked the Andino/Robinson trade. I like DD in general, and I feel he does a good job finding depth, through many means. I also feel his hands are somewhat tied financially. I have no issues with DD. I'm hesitant to call out PA again, because that may get everyone up in a bunch, and come across as a troll. I'm not aksing for a Hamilton and Grienke signing. But, must the team always look to cheap options? I'm fine with Reynold's back at 1B, that's my first choice actually. There aren't many better option's out there for 1B, yet the O's seem willing to let him walk over 2M dollars. That be fine, if we had a substantial improvement waiting to take his place. I'm not calling for a $200M payroll. In fact, the only moves i'd make are..

Sign Hamilton to play LF and be our true MOO bat. And I don't mean spend whatever it takes. I'd go as high as 5/125M with and option.

Re-sign Reynolds at 2/18M - I'd give him an option as well.

Re-sign Joe Saunders at 2/16M.

If McLouth is willing, bring him back as 4th OF. If not, we have in-house options for a 4th OF.

I don't think those are unreasonable to want. I'm not pushing for an AS at every position. Just upgrade some obvious needs, with something other then cheap options, that may or may not be an improvement.

Yeah, those moves may take the payroll up to 125M, but MASN is making money. The TV revenue starts in 2014. Some of the bigger salaries will be coming off the books in the next couple years. I understand some of the other guys salary will go up, but I think the O's can support a 120M payroll, and maybe a little more. And Frobby's thread about MASN, indicates that much.

I understand theO's don't have the recources of NY, LA, or Bos. I don't expect that. But, I do expect more then just "project" types.

I also know it's early in the winter. But, I have no reason to believe, that DD will be allowed to commit the recources to any impact players. I have no reason to believe this winter will be anything other then trying to find cheap options to fillout this team. Yeah, we made the playoffs in 2012, and didn't spend. But, that same method also got them 14 straight losing years.

These are just my opinions. I tried to answer the question the best I could. I'll probably get called out on it, but these are my opinions.

I can get down with these moves with one exception. I personally would not want to go over 5/100 for Hamilton unless it was incentive driven.

I'd rather have Danny Valencia on my 40-man roster than Joe Mahoney. The guy has options, so this is a good depth move. I'm not sure what has happened to the guy since 2010, but maybe we can figure it out.

He had his best season in ’11, when he hit .246 with 15 home runs and a team-leading 72 RBIs in a Major League-leading 154 games played. He also led Major League third baseman with 260 assists.

If Hamilton would take say a 4/100M, and 1 or 2 option years, that would be ideal. I wouldn't start at 5years either, but I would gurantee it to get it done I think. Good news is, it seems no team is willing to go 6 or 7 for Hamilton. I think the years would scare the O's more than the money. So, we can hope.

2010: 1.9 rWAR in just over half a season.

2011: -0.6 rWAR in a full season.

If Britt thinks he was better in 2011 than 2010, she's not as smart as I thought. All his cumulative statistics were better in a full season than in a half-season, duh.

Melky wanted 56 million. Josh wants 215. They both have screwed up. So they get less. So sure, you can hope.

Maybe she meant with fWAR? or maybe she got that from someone else.

Valencia might be a decent pinch hitter against lefties (career .831 OPS vs. LHP)

If Hardy was traded, and Machado moved to SS, I could see a very nice third base platoon with Valencia and Flaherty. Not predicting that will happen, but we really don't know until the music stops.

    • Yeah, basically this, that Westburg's underlying numbers (EV, barrel %, xwOBA) seem to point at this being pretty real, or at least that there's nothing 'undeserved / lucky' about this hot streak, if it's just that.
    • The problem with a Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers/Bradfield outfield roster is there are no right handers to handle LHP. I don't think and completely left handed outfield is the destination for an organization the values versatility.
    • Looks maybe concussion related.
    • How can you not be romantic about baseball? This seems slightly poetic. I enjoyed reading, and correlated your experience in the stands back to what I watch in Game 1 on MASN.  It was also pretty cool to hear Jim Palmer give you a shout out in Game 2 of the series on Live TV.
    • I am not worried.  It just doesn’t remotely meet the eye test.  He has been great in the field . I can think of at least 3 outstanding plays he has made and not any that I thought he should have gotten but didn’t. Meanwhile Holliday is 3 OAA and I can’t think of an outstanding play and can think of a number I thought he should have made.
    • Nicely stated Roy. Every since I was 9 years old and saw the O's vs. the Tokyo Giants in Tokyo in 1971, I've been infected with the Orange/Black virus. There is no cure and I don't want one. You and I sat at the lunch table with Jim Palmer at the 1970 World Series Champs reunion, and its still one of my enduring baseball memories. You said I looked like Carlton Fisk! I was at all 3 games in this Angels series, right behind the O's dugout. I got to see all our boys, and just simply love to watch this team play. And in true baseball fashion, the one game on paper we should have dominated (GRod vs. 8+ ERA Channing), we end up down 7-0 and lose. But watching Gunnar's homers, his electric triple, and he made a fantastic play today on a ball that went under Westburg's glove, Adley do Adley things, Cowser, holy crap. Kimbrel v. Trout with bases loaded, bottom of 9th, 2 outs, down by 2? That was fun. Next game Trout bats leadoff and torches a GRod fastball for a homer to the opposite field.  An observation.... If you didn't know anything about the team, and you only watched game 1 batting practice, you'd think Cowser and O'Hearn were the studs of the team. Mountcastle was taking BP with the reserves and he put on a show as well.  Home after 3 straight days watching this O's team, so jealous of the Balt fans in Balt that get to see the team with regularity. It's a special bunch.
