Royals getting Shields and Wade Davis for Wil Myers and other prospects

Tampa must be signing a free agent starter. Marcum or Saunders? Marcum made $3.95 mill last season and Saunders made $6 mill. The Twins have an offer on the table for Saunders.

Shields is due to make $10.35 mill in 2013 and has an option for 2014 to make $12 mill with a $1 mill buyout. Would the Royals flip Shields in a deal to the Orioles?

Why would Tampa waste money by signing a mid-level starter? Even by moving Shields and Davis (who was already in the pen anyways) they still have Price, Hellickson, Moore, Niemann, Archer, Cobb and Odorizzi (who they got in the trade and is close to ML ready).

They still have more pitching depth than most other teams even after this move.

Why? To either question?

The Royals wanted a front line starter. And the Rays have pitching depth.

Sounds like the Royals were trying to get pitching headed into the offseason. I doubt they'd flip Shields to us unless we gave up some pitching in return which would seem a bit redundant.

The Royals are still looking for more hitting (lower priced) in a deal and may be interested in our young starters originally mentioned in a deal for Butler. Tillman, Arrieta and a prospect for Shields or does the Royals deal now allow us to obtain the N.L. Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey whose extension should be signed soon. The Royals were believed close to a deal at the Winter Meetings to land him. We are one of the teams interested in Dickey according to a N.Y. paper. The Mets are ready to deal him and as I have said before we are a perfect fit for him and he knows Buck so he would probably like playing for him. Shields and Dickey were believed to be on DD's list as a possible #1 starter for us.

Check this out:

adam jones at 21 in AAA PCL... .314/.382/.586 25HR

wil myers at 21 in AAA PCL... .304/.378/.554 24HR

Shields and Bedard make an interesting comp too.

The returns may be similar, but Shields is better than Bedard was. Those innings that Bedard could never eat up are extremely valuable.

1. Considering they gave up one of the top 2 or 3 prospects in all of baseball to get Shields, something tells me Tillman/Arrieta/+ would get you laughed at.

2. The Royals seem to be in Win-Now mode. What would be the point of acquiring a top pitcher like Shields and then immediately shipping him off to another team?

3. The Mets current asking price for Dickey seems to be pretty high atm considering his age and contract status. I doubt he is going anywhere soon until the Mets come down from their current expectations.

Would you trade Dylan Bundy for Ryan Braun and then immediately trade Braun for prospects? Because that is essentially what you are suggesting the Royals should do.

Adam Jones 1st year in the majors had a 711 OPS. This deal probably hurts the Rays in 2013 but will help them long term.
