While I wouldn't wear either hat I will say that everyone I have seen act outraged over the new Braves hat is white and male.

I'm not so much outraged as still in disbelief that they exist. I mean look at the older designs of Chief Wahoo, WOW. It just seems to me that these logos should go the way of the minstrel show.

If people want them people want them, but as a person who has spent the better part of his life trying to understand the arc of American political and social history, it makes me wonder why these images (and the Redskins for that matter) are still culturally acceptable when other ethnic caricatures are simply not.

Wasn't grouping you in camp outraged. You seemed more like camp concerned.

KLaw on the other hand is a maniac about it.

On the amusing side Calcaterra over at hardballtalk is also freaking out about it but back in his Shysterball days I called him out for using either "Hillbillies" or "Rednecks"(I don't recall which). Evidently some social/economic groups can be labeled.

All team names, mascots and logos associated with native Americans are offensive and should be changed. Substitute another ethnic minority in there, create cartoonish logos for them, and you think they would fly?

Look at the storm that Django Unchained has created by using a word that was common in the time period in which the movie takes place.

Shame of it is, these team names are ingrained in society and make lots of money for powerful people. They're here to stay.

Good comparison. A very small but vocal group is throwing a fit about it. I just read an article today stating what a strong crossover appeal the film is showing for both Black and White audiences.

At the very least, you'd think the Indians and Braves would avoid doing this type of thing and use the most bland and inoffensive logos they could come up with, to avoid having scrutiny placed on their team names/brands (which surely are much more important and valuable than one of their logos).

You think that word would fly as a team name these days?

If not, you think "Blackskins" would work as a team name?

Just saying that there are still people who are sensitive to these racial terms, right or wrong, and that the Indian-related team names and logos are the same.

I'll just say this...when Pollin changed the Bullets to the Wizards, it wasn't the Washington team that should have changed it's name.

The Indians have changed their hat to the "C" logo...not sure if they still use the old Chief Wahoo one.

Just saying that there are still people who are sensitive to these racial terms, right or wrong, and that the Indian-related team names and logos are the same as more offensive possibilities.

Not disagreeing. Just saying there is a certain group which seems to revel in their outrage even when someone else is the aggrieved party.

When I gave Calcaterra grief it was just to point out his hypocrisy.

What is interesting about Florida State is that they have a really strong relationship with the Seminole nation and that ritual, as I understand it, is about as historically accurate as it can be. The head dress, the vestments, etc.

So take that for what it is worth.
