GAH!!!

Get it done!

5 years, $90 million. We get Matt long-term, and he should be young enough at the end to get another decent pay-day. Everybody wins.

That would be around what I'd expect him to get on the free market this year. Since we're buying out some arbitration years, I'd say 5/65 is reasonable. $25 mil over the 3 arbitration years and $40 mil over the 2 FA years. That's a deal that involves both sides taking on some risk.

Signing "Weithers" to an extension should hopefully shut up the people whining about the lack of moves this off season.

This winter could get a lot more exciting <a href="http://s1106.photobucket.com/albums/h367/isestrex/Emoticons/?action=view&current=eusa_dance.gif" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h367/isestrex/Emoticons/eusa_dance.gif" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Great to hear.

I wonder if the FO has already been working on an extension? Then it might make sense as to why they are hesitant to add very much payroll from free agency.

Boras is a factor, but I never thought he was as much a factor as others have. If Matt wants to stay in Baltimore, he'll stay in Baltimore.

He is a factor. And in a different situation Boras might push Matt in other directions. But Buck has pushed Matt's thinking WAY back the other way. Matt is Buck's right hand man. Field General. Of course Matt wants to stay!

I think you guys are underestimating the power of Scott Boros. This is a guy that just got Rafeal Soriano $14 million from the Nationals. The only chance we have of a decent extension is if Matt is serious about wanting to stay in Baltimore and he drops Boros as his agent. Boros is not interested in his players leaving a legacy or being happy where they play, he's interested in making the absolutely bottom dollar he can make for his clients and himself.

Any player that has Boros as an agent is not giving hometown discounts nor are they signing any team friendly deals regardless of the fluff that a player puts out in the media. It's not Boros' style and players that have him as an agent know this quite well.

I'd like to see Matt extended, but I don't see it happening as long as he employs Boros as an agent.

Wieters can think for himself.

Jered Weaver did

Tony, you know better then this.

Ultimately Boras works for the player not the other way around. If a Boras client wants to sign an extension (Varitek) he will and if he wants to give a hometown discount (Weaver) he will.

Wieters signed with Boras out of college, which was a great idea to maximize his initial earnings. His situation now is a lot different. Sure Boras will suggest he go in another direction but Wieters has the final say.

Boras is big on getting an out option in a contract, I would expect one. It would get the Orioles a more favorable deal, and let them up the ante if he exceeds expectations. Because of his bat speed, I have concerns about MW's performance once his reflexes begin to slow.

Way too much. Something like this:

'13: 4.5M

'14: 8M

'15: 12M

'16: 16M

'17: 17M

That's 5/57.5 and probably a pretty fair deal.

I just don't think Wieters bat is worth anywhere near 16 or 17 million per season. I love the defense and arm ...but for me he'd have to finally establish his offensive numbers.

How about. 6 , 8 , 10, 11, 12 ?

That probably isn't much (if any) more than he'd get going year to year. WHy would Wieters sign that deal??

Well, it isn't much (if any) less than he would get going year to year, either, is it? He has stated that he would like to stay with the Orioles and this would give him long-term security. I think there is a lot to be said for long-term security, especially for a catcher. I don't think extensions are only signed when the player thinks he is being offered a lot more than he figures to get by going year to year. Look at Longoria.
