Does Mattingly deserve to be in the Hall?

Donnie Baseball was fantastic for a few years, I would say perhaps the most feared hitter in the game. Then he became ordinary.

I say no

That sounds about right. I agree.

I bet he gets in anyway, just because of the whole you-know-what thing, but I agree.

No way unless he has a long, successful managerial career.

He had four MVP-ish seasons, three years as a good ballplayer, and a few years as David Segui-lite. Even in his big years his plate discipline kept him from being super-great - he'd hit .350 with 40 unintentional walks in 160 games, so his OBP never hit .400.

If he'd been good enough to hang around another five years to build counting stats he might have a shot. But I think he's waiting in line behind a lot of better first basemen who were his peers who aren't in, like Keith Hernandez and Will Clark.

I being also of the strickest of people when entering the HOF would vote no.

I admired him as a player and a person but just not HOF material.

Puckett did more for the game and was a unique person with a personality that everyone seemed to love and he was a joy to watch playing a game he really respected.

Certain indivuals are worth paying to see and in my opinon Puckett was one of them. I can't say the same for Mattingly but he has earned my respect in how he played the game and handled himself. That speaks for something, so if he made it, I would have no problem.

Though I personally wouldn't vote him in.

    • He is not the answer by himself, but along with Westburg and maybe Kjerstad, you'd be upgrading the bottom of the lineup who are all automatic outs to average or better hitters. We dominated the league with Gunnar plus a bunch of .750-.800 guys. Yes, we need at least a couple of Cowser, O'Hearn, Adley, and Santander to pick things up. But every bit helps and right now Urias we would be a massive upgrade over what we're getting from Holliday.
    • Question for all of you corporate types: If you owned this "company," what's your next step?  Perhaps even more importantly, what do you do in the off season?  Based on performance, the team is competitive. I think most pundits have the team as 99% likely to make the playoffs. However, I think the NYY are favored to win the division. by those same pundits. At the start of the season, the goal was to make the playoffs. Mission likely accomplished for the second year in a row. That's in spite of a vicious injury bug.  However, there is an old saying in business that if you are not improving, you are going backwards. This team does not appear to be improved from 2023. What do you do about that?  IMHO, this is a pivotal off season for the O's. Lots of important decisions to make. Plenty of salary flexibility. Many of the young star prospects have gotten their feet wet. It seems rather clear that the existing player assets are rather well defined.  It should be an interesting winter.
    • I saw this scrolling on Instagram and just assumed it was a joke.  Guess I was wrong
    • I doubt there will be a change but I'm sure it would be someone who is on the Elias/Sig train of thinking.
    • Norby was on a heater that got everyone overreacting. I hope he has a long MLB career. But he is also 0 for his last 17 now with 7 k's. People want to ignore that though to fit the narrative.
    • Is Urias an upgrade over Rivera? Sure. But I dont think hes anyone thats going to change the trajectory of this team. He was awful for 80% of this season, then turned it on the last month or so. Hopefully he comes back and is that person from August. Kjerstad should be back, but based on what we've seen in the past, he wont play. Hyde has had him and Mayo on completely different playing schedules than the other young guys. O'Hearn is just showing who he is unfortunately. Exposed in an every day role. He was best in the platoon DH and sometimes 1B role.
    • You might get Urias and maybe Kjerstad. what they need more is guys that are here doing better, Adley and O'hearn snapping out of their months long slumps. Any contribution from Holliday, Mayo and Jimenez would help too.
