This latest ARoid news has me worried.

I assume that even if they get the insurance, the salary still counts against the cap and therefore still handicapps the Yanks as to what they can do salary wise? The real worry to me is if he retires and the Yanks get freed of the contract.

Do you really think ARoid would leave money on the table?

It's the culture of baseball now. Clemen's will be an advisor with the Houston Astros. If their pitching staff has an amazing turn around, then they should all be tested ASAP! Guilt by association. Please DD, keep Manny as far away from that tool Arod as possible. And that has nothing to do with PED's. Just don't want Arod and his douchebag personality rubbing off on Manny. Look to Adam and Matt Manny...look to Adam and Matt.

That would just be silly. Yes Clemens took PED's but pitchers on the Astros should not be tested simply because Clemens coached

them. I never want to see a time when a manager or the GM can a player who his offseason off field friends or

he can associate with. That would be living under a dictator. Look I don't like ARod either. But the hatred for him

I see by some is overboard. He is a good player. If Manny is or believes ARod can help him well then so be it. IMO

I would hope that Machado and all the Orioles players are clean. But, if MLB was really serious about stopping PED use and cleaning up the game, they would institute a

"Strike One and You're Permanently Out" policy....no matter how painful that may be.

ARoid's "nutritional and training" adviser is being investigated as part of a big crack down on south FL health clubs and clinics by MLB and DEA. ARoid is Manny's mentor and they often train together. God I wish they could send him out to CA to work out with Brady....Oh, wait.

I remember hearing that Manny looked up to ARod, but where have we heard that he is/was Manny's mentor and training partner? Could we be over exaggerating his influence?

Hopefully. I don't think we know the extent of their relationship. Hopefully it's just that -- young South Florida guy admiring an older South Florida guy who made it big.

A number of articles: here are a few:

"But Rodriguez, with whom Machado now works out with regularly at the University of Miami facility, didn't make the transition from shortstop to third base until midway through what is now a 19-year major league career."

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/orioles/2012/10/07/orioles-yankees-playoffs-manny-machado-alex-rodriguez-idol/1618127/

"Alex Rodriguez never considered that his offseason workout partner might stand in the way of his pursuit of a World Series ring,"

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20121007&content_id=39575344&notebook_id=39575346&vkey=notebook_nyy&c_id=nyy

"Machado, who called A-Rod his ?favorite player growing up,? has worked out in Miami with Rodriguez in the offseason, wears No. 13 in his honor and received advice from him on transitioning from shortstop to third base"

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/yankees/rod_vs_rod_TPsCS1OVl6Tq01wOdV3vuL

But the fact that they share this guy as an agent is the most disturbing:

"Over the winter, even before Rodriguez made it official with Lozano, he was seen hanging out with a trio of highly ranked Miami-based prospects: the Orioles' Manny Machado, the Reds' Yonder Alonso, and the Twins' Danny Valencia. A South Florida-based agent says Rodriguez was the elder statesmen showing the kids a good time: parties, events, and just chilling at his condo. In February, all three left their current agencies and signed with Dan Lozano."

New York Daily News

from the yankees’ standpoint, the best-case scenario would be for a-rod to never come back, for that would effectively get them out from under the remaining five years, $114 million on his contract. Not only would the insurance kick in for 85% of that, but a-rod would become a voluntarily retired player with a paid-up contract that comes off the yankee books (and subsequently would lessen their luxury-tax burden).

Someone else mentioned this before, but I don't see what kind of insurance company would insure a 10 year contract for a guy who will be that old at the end of it. How much did the policy cost?

The link I posted said it probably wasn't one insurance company but a group of them sharing the risk.

85% for the entirety of the contract still seems remarkable even given Arod's record of health before he signed his new deal.

Miguel Cabrera is evidently involved as well. Manny would be small fry compared if in any way involved.
Not to me. I don't care if MCab is suspended. If Manny gets suspended I'll be very unhappy. You should read that Lazano Dead Spin article. If a third of it is true, Manny is keeping some very bad company.
