Unloading it is absolutely #1 on the checklist. Apparently, he mis-remembered his hunter safety training.

Hard to clean a gun if you don't field strip it. Gun owners who have even taken the basic safety course, should know that you treat every gun as if it is loaded, even if you know it's not. Check it, then check again, and still observe the rules of never pointing it at something that you are not willing to destroy. Oh, yeah, and never put your finger on the trigger until you have the gun on target and are ready to shoot.
