I have no sympathy whatsoever for people who drive drunk and think society goes far too easy on them. They get off with a slap on the wrist and go out and do it again. There needs to be significant mandatory jail time, and not just for when you finally kill somebody.

That being said, this passenger was probably killed because she was ejected from the car.

People, wear your friggin' seatbelts. They're really not that bad. When I drive with passengers, I don't take the car out of park until I've visually verified that everyone is buckled in. You don't like it? Get out and walk. Unfortunately, drunk drivers kill a ton of people who were buckled in, doing everything right, and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, but you can take a few simple steps to protect yourself. Too late for that poor woman.

Is what I'm sayin'... Gigantic SUV vs. little Mitsubishi... plus she wasn't wearing her seat belt. Worst case scenario.

I learned my seat belt lesson luckily. I totalled my wonderful old Bmer, I was following an SUV, which was following a flatbed junk truck. The truck slowed to make a turn, I glanced away for JUST a sec! The trucked slowed, the SUV slowed, I got the brakes on for about a millisecond...

I wasn't going 30 mph even, LUCKILY I had my seatbelt on ( rare for me then). Just a 28 mph crash is a VIOLENT crash. The seatbelt kind of "folded" my chest/shoulder. It was stiff and sore for over a year after that. But considering the option of me bouncing full force off the steering wheel, then head first into (or thru...) the windshield... I wear my seatbelt all the time now. ;)

Driving under the influence of alcohol and killing somebody with your vehicle, you should be prosecuted just like you would if you had shot someone with a gun. No difference. I have zero sympathy for him... I do feel for the victims family, especially the 2 children who will grow up without their mother.

DUI drivers get way too lenient punishment and what is needed is more prison/jail time.

Do you feel the same way about people who cause accidents while talking on the cell phone, changing a CD, or are driving too tired? Don't get me wrong, I think there should be stiff penalties for drunk drivers (there are many, many options to avoid the situation), but people who drive distracted now are the norm, not the exception. People who claim they can drive safely while chatting on a cell phone are fooling themselves just as much as the person who has a few drinks at Happy Hour and drives home.

On may way to BWI for my honeymoon three years ago, the driver of the blue shuttle van had a cellphone in EACH hand, a map on his lap, and was driving with his knees :D:eek:

Obviously. Anybody who contributes to the death of another due to negligence on their part deserves to be charged as such.

Absolutely! Anybody that takes another persons life while driving and not in full capacity of their vehicle deserves serve punishment. I remember awhile back of a 20 year old driver that was talking on her cell phone on the Capital Beltway who lost control of her vehicle and crashed and killed 5 people.

BTW - Leyritz was not out during Happy Hour having a few drinks. The police got the accident call at 3:20 AM.

In texas if you don't wear your seatbelt it is big fine. 250.00. I don't ever want to see someone get gang raped. That is terrible. He will spend the rest of his life in jail. That is good enough for him. I can see where osme thank that killing someone because of DUI would be the same as killing someone by premeditation. It is a difference. He didn't mean to go out and kill someone. It was a horrible accident. Don't get me wrong. I am not defending him at all. I want the rest of his life in jail. No chance of getting out after 10 or so years. As for drivers talking on their cells it makes me mad they do that. They are not paying any attention to their driving. I have seen photos of a man that was talking on his cell. He was ina horrible accident. He was decapitated. That was a photo i wish i had not seen.

    • Some years they are bad, other years they aren’t.  It’s been rough early on although the refs have definitely screwed them too.
    • Rain won’t help either.    At this point just hoping for a 4-2 week and see what happens. Not saying that’s going to happen….   Would be nice to have home field in WC round. I’m guessing a bunch of 3pm games.
    • I'm still new to watching Ravens and I don't watch the other teams' games, but it seems the Ravens draw way more penalties than the opposition, game in and game out. Is that true? If so, it's another indictment of "pained expression" Harbaugh.
    • Why can’t it be that the players are just failing?  Were the coaches failing through June?  Last year?
    • Seattle up to within 2.5 of Minnesota for a wildcard as they get ready to welcome the Yankees Tues/Wed/Thurs.     We'll see if any advantage can be taken in Series 1 with HFA and a playoff vs. non-playoff on paper opponent edge. The club has done about all it can to make its home fans morose in what potentially could have been a pumped up week.    Hopefully fans still show up in force and maybe give the guys a little jolt.
    • Yeah. Won't those people who criticized Elias for drafting all those pitchers and passing on athletic shortstops and sluggers feel silly then? Oh, wait .  .  .
    • True, if you're talking about guys without batting talent. But there are numerous guys on the Orioles who have proven ability to hit in the ML or are believed to have a high level of ability to do that, and almost all of them are performing poorly. Isn't the job of coaches to help those guys to maximize and utilize their talent? I don't know what the hitting coaches are doing, but it's not working. I'm not saying the hitting coaches are incompetent. I can't judge that. But it appears that they have been ineffective in helping this group of hitters with their current problems. That suggests to me that there is a shortcoming in either the coaches' advice or their communication of that advice to the players.
