Owners become even bigger scumbags

To be fair, the headline ought to be "Owners ABOUT TO Become Even Bigger Scumbags," since they haven't actually done anything and may not.

But yeah, pretty awful if true.

Just the idea that they would do this, and try to make the vote secret says enough about their scumminess.

Wow...I mean, isnt 75% of that park vacant every home game anyway? You have how man paying season ticket holders and you then choose to sue them because you blocked their seats that they were willing to purchase to watch a team you traded away? Loria and Dan Snyder are best friends forever!

Pretty sure Loria can't be shamed.

He can't. Like I've said before, I hated Loria more in 03 then any other time I've known about him because in the 03 World Series, the Yankees and the owners were the lesser of two evils.

That's how slimy and rotton Loria is and I wasn't the only one who felt that way.

This is kind of a sign o' the times. Defined benefit pension plans are becoming less and less common. For that matter, employer matching of 401(k) contributions also is becoming much less common.

But still, I think MLB would do well to hold the line against those trends and continue providing these plans. The owners make an awful lot of money and a lot of the staff get paid a pittance in salary for the amount of value they produce and the amount of time they spend at the office and on the road.

Pensions are a perk and are on the endangered species. In this case, I would hope current employees would be grandfathered under whatever is the existing pension plan for their respective club. Future employees should be advised that they need to take steps to build their own nest eggs. It's pretty easy to set aside money from each paycheck for your future. And to those who say, "I can't afford to", I say, "you can't afford not to".

    • Generous? You are aware that multiple players have hit the 10M mark as an Arb 1 right?
    • Its a low risk scenario, so we may grab someone to get a look at them in spring training, but I don't expect the Orioles to keep anyone on the roster. There just isn't space.  The bullpen may have a spot or two open, but several arms are lacking options and a Rule-5 guy wouldn't be able to be sent down. Elias (and most teams) like to have at least a spot or two that can be used to shuttle guys up and down in case of overwork. I don't see a guy worth taking a spot like that on a team that just won 101 games.
    • Why not try and snag an arm in the rule 5?  Not glamorous enough?  What relievers are drafted/signed and turned to relievers before AA/AAA ball?  Ben Joyce?  So everyone is a failed SP. Either because of injury or performance. So why not take a flier on an arm when upper level pitching depth is a weakness of our org? We might never guess the player, but I think we can see that RH P is a need for us at the top of the system. The Yankees have a nasty bullpen. If they’ve been delaying converting a SP to a reliever then we should be all over that. That’s not being poor. That’s being smart, but we are poor.
    • That’s a lot cheaper than the alternatives.  Matz has kind of been up and down and has never been an innings eater.   He finished real strong his last six starts but a lat strain ended his season.  In some ways he has Oriole written all over him.   The fact that he’s 32 and his career high in IP is 160 makes me question if he really is their kind of guy.
    • If the team decided that Wells had just reached his innings limit and we just shut him down last year then I think the opinion of Wells’ 2023 season as a SP would be much different.  We need a SP and a high leverage reliever for next year. What role is Wells in 2023?  What’s best for Wells and the team long term?  Is this decision going to be about Wells, or more based on what FA takes our offer?  Whether that be a reliever or SP. People just write off Wells as a #5, but at the ASB you could make an argument for Wells, or Bradish, as who was our best SP. Wells was leading the AL in WHIP. Wells showed last year that he can be at least a #3 type of SP. Everyone has known since we took him in the Rule 5 draft that it was going to take some time to build him up to even 150-160 IP. Ok, so big deal… that didn’t happen in year two, and his first year starting full time. I don’t think the org just gives up on him as a SP like a lot have. I think he could be an All Star Closer. He would be our 3rd closer in a row to do that. That’s a very valuable role for us. But give me the SP that only gave up more than 3 ER three times in his first 18 starts.
    • Matz is owed 2yr/$25 million. There’s no way that we’re paying that let alone trading for it. Trading isn’t a bad idea and I think it’s on the table for us if need be.
