Derek Jeter Scratched from Lineup with Sore Ankle (3/19)

Not too surprising. He's probably going to have some pain there from time to time, or maybe even on a regular basis. No reason to push him in spring training. My guess is he'll play with the pain when the season is underway.

And one can only hope that it will effect his productivity in a big way :)

Jeter fractured his left ankle during Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, had surgery on it later that month and played in his first Spring Training game on March 9. He made his first start at shortstop on March 13.

At some point over the next few weeks, Girardi planned to ramp up Jeter's innings at shortstop, though both he and Jeter said it wouldn't be necessary to play a full nine innings there before the regular season begins. Girardi said this latest development might affect the plan going forward. Earlier Tuesday morning, Girardi said that plan could involve Jeter being the Yankees' Opening Day designated hitter, not shortstop.

"I'd like to have him at shortstop on Opening Day, but if we collectively feel he could use a few more days, we'll wait," Girardi said. "I've said all along we've got to play it by ear. My goal is to have him at shortstop, and that's his goal. But we might have to make some adjustments on the fly."

Jeter has said repeatedly that he will be ready to play shortstop come Opening Day, though he added Tuesday that he'll line up wherever he's told to play. He didn't think Tuesday's stiffness would change whether he'll be ready to take the field on April 1.

I'm getting the distinct feeling that this will become a problem for him in 2013 and beyond. Could this be the end of Jeter's career as his mobility will be severely hampered by the foot? Or will he transition into a platoon-DH guy?

I think he will exercise his player option, and retire after next year.

They're probably better off if he does DH a lot, especially early. It's not like they have a lot of big bats to put in the DH spot, so they might as well upgrade their defense and keep Jeter healthy.

That's actually... pretty smart. Too bad Jeter's ego is too big that he'll retire before playing anywhere other than SS.

Sorry...did I say bad?

I was at the game and saw Jeter taking BP and he looked pretty good to me. A friend said he tweaked it during fielding and gave the "wave off". There was a pack of reporters around Girardi outside the dugout just before the game, and I was wondering what all the commotion was since Jeter was listed as playing.

My gut says he's taking it slowly and not trying to do damage but JMO.

The guy who was impressive in BP was their 29 year old Cuban-defector infielder, Ronnier Mustelier. He bombed one off the Tiki Bar roof in left with authority. The Phils' pitching held him in check all day however. Hafner did nothing, Youk looked good at first and Gardner was his usual speedy self, manufacturing a run with a bunt single and scoring on an Ichiro double. Big Dawg Joba was impressive, but that was about all.

Bill Madden (NY Daily News beat writer) is suggesting that perhaps Jeter is done.

Afterall, he's 38 (soon to be 39). Shortstop is a very demanding position. Of course they could move him to 3B (ala Cal Ripken) but then they'd have two very expensive, broken-down stiffs occupying 3B. DH? Don't think so. Doesn't have the power any longer and his speed is seriously impacted by the injury.

Let the good times roll!
