Wieters Comes Into His Own

FWIW, here are the best months of Wieters' career:

9/09: .333/.395/.486, 4 HR, 17 RBI

7/10: .289/.389/.511, 2 HR, 6 RBI

8/11: .302/.381/.570, 5 HR, 15 RBI

9/11: .247/.326/.541, 7 HR, 16 RBI

4/12: .279/.364/.574, 6 HR, 15 RBI

9/12: .296/.389/.541, 6 HR, 18 RBI

4/14: .338/.370/.554, 4 HR, 15 RBI

So, it's not like Wieters has never had a hot month before. However, his BA this month is the highest he's ever had. It's notable that Wieters never had a month over .790 OPS last year, and it's the only year in which he didn't have at least one really good month. It therefore seems likely that Wieters' final 2014 numbers will be better than 2013, even if he never has another hot month this year.

From a career point of view, Wieters' worst months are May and June, and you can see above that he's never really had a hot month then. So, if Wieters has a good May this year, we could really be on to something.

Wieters' 2014 BABIP (.362 vs. career .285) screams regression until you look at his LD% (32.3% vs. career 18.4%). The truth probably lies somewhere in between, but there are reasons, both analytical and observational, to be optimistic.

Not to jinx anything - but I think we may be seeing the Matt Weiters we all expected a few years ago. His confidence, to the naked eye, is at an all time high. He looks comfortable from both sides and his bat speed visually seems quicker. But perhaps the biggest difference is his patience. He lost the battle in his 2nd to last at bat last night, but it was a fantastic at bat.

Good.

That's probably the way that most home runs are hit ...... not actually thinking in terms of hitting one over the wall, but just trying to make solid contact, and giving it a nice, hard swing.

  • 1 year later...
*Bump*

More than a year later and I'm glad to have him back if only to give Joseph a rest. Anything else is gravy.

Man oh man was I glad to see Darth Wieters behind the plate. He is just so quiet behind the plate. Tillman didn't shake him off. Makes the whole team better. Big smile.
