I'm not bemoaning the loss of Reynolds, but...

Bah. Obviously should have signed all the free agents who're playing well through the first week. Obviously.

You mean the ones who were discussed here as potential targets in many threads this offseason?

Or should we as fans be OK with standing pat and letting Steve Pearce get everyday AB's?

I dunno, if Reynolds were on the team, Davis would be DH'ing and possibly hitting at a different spot in the lineup. Can you guarantee he'd have been as hot over the first week? Everything changes everything, as Earl Weaver liked to say.

Everything Changes Everything. Chris Davis could have pulled a hammy playing left.

Pretty much. For now. When Everyday means the once or twice a week that we face a left hander.

If the Orioles thought for a second they could let Reynolds go, or refrain from signing Morse or any other solid DH candidate, because of Nolan Reimold, I have to question the competence of that person.

I love Nolan but he can't stay healthy. And Chris Davis' start to the season has been great, so I get that Davis basically replaced Reynolds. But we've got Steve Pearce getting regular AB's because Reimold is injured. And while I know his injury may not send him to the DL, who would be surprised if it did?

Meanwhile, Reynold and Morse have 9 HR combined.

I completely agree. I am not saying Reynolds was the all out answer, but they should of been able to replace him and not bank on Reimold and even Roberts for that matter. There were a few options that we could of had to replace Reynolds, Morse, Laroche, and Swisher come to mind. The good news is it is still very early. But the fact that this team is 1 or 2 guys away from being very very good is kind of frustrating.

Reimold is out of options. Someone would have picked him up. Let's see how hot people are for Reynolds after a month of .188 and a strikeout every 2 AB's. That may not happen but it could very easily. He disappeared for about 2 months last year. Everything is magnified at the beginning of a season both good and bad.

People here (not necessarily saying only you) act like that last year was the only year that ever mattered in the career of Mark Reynolds. It was the only year to ever base anything off of and the only reason why we shouldn't have brought him back.

All of a sudden people are crying about Steve Pearce getting at-bats in the DH slot. Interesting.

Yes it gets tiresome to hear about this subject every time Reynolds hits a homerun, but it should be fair game to bring it up.

I supported keeping Reynolds, but if we are going to re-argue this every time Reynolds hits a homer, we have to expect his detractors to bring it up every time he strikes out twice or more in one game. And frankly, there's nothing new to be said on this topic.

Of course it's April 8th, it's early, and I'm going to make a bunch of fairly definitive statements based on this microsample.

Wow, Drungo on the snark path..

Everything I said is factual. I stated the issues that many of the posters (including yourself IIRC) had been saying all offseason. In seven games, we have seen those very issues pop up. The point of the post (since you didn't understand #ICANBESNARKYTOO) was that the events in this "microsample" are tied to these issues, so it should be no surprise that people are freaking out. Also, given these issues were discussed ad nauseum during the offseason, no one should be surprised that they have occurred.

The only "definitive" statement is that it is early. These trends may or may not continue. These first 7 games may be ironic or they may portend the rest of the season. We will have to see. (not definitive)

Yes, we will see. Because all we have now with a 3-4 team is confirmation bias.

    • Lost in the cut play was that HJ got no help from Holliday who hesitated as if he had to cover the bag (he's not a 2b yet).   HJ made a poor throw but Holliday has to be in the correct position for the cut-not running and expecting the RF to pick him up.  Palmer thought they had a play at second but with Holliday hesitating and not lined up he would have to catch the ball then set and then throw against his momentum which isn't easy.  Not excusing the poor throw but the execution of the throw is a lot easier if the first cut in lined up correctly and not still moving.
    • Grayson command (at least to me) is unusually poor for an elite starter.  He often gets away with it because his stuff is so darn nasty.  Even last night, Grayson got 14 swing and misses. all that being said, I do wonder if Grayson was tipping his pitches again (it was speculated in 1H23).  Because the Angels got such high EVs on a variety of different pitch types, and not just sitting on one specific pitch.
    • That's what, second on the team?  😉
    • I like how you credit Elias and Company for developing Grayson but forget that Hall showed little progress under their development. I don't see how you can look at what they have accomplished with hitters and think, hey, let's also try and give them credit for a pitcher that Dan's team selected. Is what they've accomplished with hitters not enough to warrant a thread praising them? The post would be a lot stronger without trying to shoehorn in the pitcher.
    • 5 turns along Grayson sits 5th in 4-seam fastball velo among SP, lagging... Hunter Greene, 2019 TJ Jared Jones, a survivor like him, so far doing exciting things Jordan HIcks, 2019 TJ Dylan Cease, 2014 TJ Grayson got to 3000 game pitches in 2023; Jared Jones' 2022-2023 looks like 2050 and 2067 pitches according to Fangraphs.
    • None of this equals having great command. He gave up 2 runs over 6 innings in his prior start vs Minnesota. Fits the qualifiers mentioned in your post - he did not have great command.
    • Agreed.  It is the whole organization.  Hyde for me also does not get enough credit. But the first hire was the most important, Elias and the first person he hired was Sig.  I also think we will see a huge impact from the International Scouting Director in the next 2-3 years.  It is just unreal that if a baseball fan could pick any team today to be a fan of for the next 5-10 years they would almost have to pick the Orioles.
