Erik Bedard, 2013

"Burying the lead" is a journalistic technical term. In journalism you want the part of the story most readers will want to read about at the top of the story with the less important stuff afterwards.

If someone was writing a sports article for the Baltimore Sun or The Washington Post or SI or something, you would want the no-hit bid to be at the top of the story.

Of course, this isn't a sports page. So, take it as you will...

Yeah, I misunderstood what he (Paul) said. Thanks.

In other journalism news, ESPN doesn't even recognize Bedard's name on the front page this morning.

"Astros P halts own no-no | M's win with 1 hit"

Really ESPN? You don't think the average baseball fan knows who Erik Bedard is?

Bedard's a loser. He begged out of the game in the 7th after giving up a walk (that eventually scored). I guess he figures since he's on the Stros he's not going to over-exert himself.

A loser and a head case. What a great trade the O's made.

Yeah, personally I'd prefer he stick out there until he gives up a hit, but he'd walked 5 batters, he'd thrown a lot of pitches, he's been injured and also has no history of going into high pitch counts, and he probably wouldn't have completed the no-no anyway. He may have cost the team if he'd stayed in. So I don't blame him, and don't have a problem with it, but it does strike me as unusual that a MLB pitcher would willingly come out with a no-hitter going and the chance to add his name to history. Bedard is definitely an odd bird.

I've never understood all the Bedard hate. By WAR his 2007 season was the best by an Orioles pitcher since Mussina in the early 90's. Lots of guys don't pitch that many innings, and his stats would have been better with a more effective bullpen. I still think he would make a decent #5 starter.

I can't really blame Bedard. But OTOH I thought it was neat to see Tillman, one of the guys traded for him hate to leave tonight. You know Chris wanted that complete game badly. I

think Erik's career is on the last stages. It's too bad. He's a talented guy but injuries and endurance have never been kind to him.

Why the heck shouldn't he bow out if he was done? Did you miss the 5 walks and 2 runs he had allowed? As you stated he has had numerous health problems in the past. Why should he continue in the game that his team was not even winning?

Of course he could have toughed it out like Johan Santana did (8.27 ERA after the no hitter and got injured).

And it was me, there is already a thread on Bedard on the MLB board dontcha' know.

Because. Look around baseball at what his peers are saying. You don't ask out of a no-hitter. He gave up the runs after he left.. why not just give them up yourself and THEN be done. At least allow a hit first.

Who cares what his peers are saying. Are his peers going to magically correct his shoulder after his career ends? It says something about a guy that he knows when he's done and isn't going to risk injury to himself and ineffectiveness to his team when he has nothing left. He's not a Verlander, he knows it and he doesn't try to be.

Anyone give Bob Milacki crap for not finishing his no hitter in '91?

Yesterday, some fan called into 105.7 the Fan and claimed Bedard was the 3rd best SP pitcher in Oriole History.

The host, not sure who is was, sorry.

Disagreed with top 3, said, he did deserve top 10 and this was his list:

Mussina

Palmer

Cuellar

McNally

Boddicker

McGregor

Erickson

Bedard
