He will get on a mini tear I can feel it. He is like Lazurus, you want to bury him and he does something. One thing though, his defense has been outstanding surprisingly...so not a total loss. But not a long run option. He wont be sent down, can play OF,SS,3b,1b and 2b.....if anyone goes is will be Casilla. If I were him, I would warm up pitchers between innings in games he doesnt play.

Cal was 21 in his rookie season. Dauer was 23.

Comparing Flaherty to Cal isn't Apples to Oranges it is Apples to Dirigibles.

Actually Dauer was 24. He had 42 at bats at 23 but the next season when he was an oriole full-time he was hitting .080 on June 4th. And he had over 600 at bats at AAA. You have to be patient with younger players. Cal also had over 500 at bats at AAA and was hitting .165 on this date in 1982. He also had at-bats in 1981 and he peformed very poorly.

If the Orioles brass thinks he is going to be a hitter then they will stick with him.

Also, Dauer was a extremely highly rated prospect when he came up, but never lived up to that type of expectations. He was a prized gem of the farm at that time.

Yep, so comfortable that they let Bobby Grich walk.

He really hasn't played at triple A. If he spent last season at triple A he would be called up now and be able to produce.

That's quite a leap. There are many players who produce reasonably well in AA and yet never become major league players.

Dirigibles are rigid airships.

Dirigible is just a synonym for airship, so it could refer to rigid, semi-rigid, or a blimp. Old-school Zeppelins had a full rigid skeleton supporting them, and the modern Zeppelins are known as semi-rigid airships because they have a rigid keel supporting the gasbag.

Don't mess with a guy who went out of his way to go to the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen! :)

Payback for getting you on a technicality yesterday eh? Well played.

Keep in mind as well that sending Flaherty down requires a ripple effect through the organization. If Schoop doesn't come up, and it looks like he is not ready for that, then you have to move Schoop down. That would hamper the development of the Orioles best position prospect.

If you decide instead to move Flaherty from 2B to another position then you are moving perhaps the teams best defensive second baseman from his best position. If you move Schoop you threaten to remove the attribute that perhaps makes him most valuable, which is his plus bat at 2B.

I agree with the frustration. In the best case scenario you are getting the best production you can out of every hitter. However, over a month into the season, the Orioles are the second best team in baseball, even with a gaping hole. So what really is there to complain about?

Keep in mind Schoop has played over half his games in Norfolk this year at SS (16 out of 30), so you could send Flaherty down and not have to do a thing with Schoop. They could play side by side if you wanted. Sending Flaherty down most certainly does not have to hamper Schoop's development.

Exactly. Flaherty needs to get his hitting staightened out and can play pretty much everywhere.

I was serious about Bowie. They could use his glove and Norfolk isn't where I want to send someone to get their bat straightened out. Let him get into a groove at Bowie then go from there.

I think it was less that they were so comfortable with Dauer they thought he'd step right into Grich's shoes, than it was they were in denial about free agency. Oriole ownership at the time pretty much took the stance that free agency was stupid and they weren't paying more than the old going rate for anybody. So they just traded anyone who was coming up on free agency, or if that didn't work they just let them walk.

I think he's going to see the better offspeed stuff in AAA.
