Is Wieters a disappointment?

Yeah, I guess I wasn't totally clear - I know the connotations that the terms "defensive catcher" and "offensive catcher" generally carry. I imagine it as a venn diagram, with a small percentage of catchers falling into the space in which they could be described in either sense, so my (attempted) point was that, especially in Matt's case, the two terms are not mutually exclusive, no matter the traditional connotations.

Yeah, you are right - when I hear defensive catcher I picture: .215/.265/.325 ... a traditional catch and throw guy with no bat.

He was supposed to be a switch hitting Mike Piazza with a far better arm. He's a good player, yeah, but he's still a disappointment compared to his prospect status. He was supposed to be a major superstar offensively and defensively.

The batting average is the one thing I'm most disappointed in, personally. He had like a career .350 minor league batting average, yet that hasn't transitioned to the majors at all. I was thinking he'd be a minimum .300 guy.

It's amazing that you have no clue as to how unreasonable those expectations were - and that you're not the only one.

It doesn't matter whether the expectations were unreasonable, just that the expectations were there. Would you not say that Jay Bruce has been a disappointment, even though he's a pretty good player? "Disappointing" is a relative term. I was disappointed that Ken Griffey, Jr. didnt break Hank AAron's HR record after what he did in the first decade of his career.

Maybe it's all semantics, but would you characterize Griffey as a "disappointment?"

Wieters is the biggest disappointment I can think of overall. Yes, I know he's a nice guy. Yes, I know he calls a good game and throws out would-be base stealers. I get all that. But I also get the fact that he's never going to be a good hitter. I suppose I wouldn't be so critical if he hadn't been sold to us as the next Joe Mauer or a "switch-hitting Jesus." I would absolutely consider trading Wieters at some point for the right return, someone who is a decent catcher but can also hit better than .225/13HR/55RBI per season.

Odd considering that Matt's 162 game average is .259/21/80

Except that Manny can hit a baseball on a consistent basis and he hasn't even been here for a full year. I didn't expect Wieters to hit .350, but he can't even break above .250 and usually hovers around .220. That's a bust to me after all these years.

Other then a desire to troll is there a reason why you are ignoring facts? Matt has never finished a season batting less then .249.

.

Every time that I have even the slightest disappointment in any member of the team (Matt Wieters or anyone else), I simply remind myself of my feelings about Lew Ford, and thank goodness that there aren't more than one of him.

I hate Matt Wieters because he hits .180 every year with 2 homers.

Especially considering that Piazza, a DH of a catcher, has had rumors surrounding his back acne for years.

Tell the big lie enough times and folk will believe it. We ran Eddie Murray out of town you know.

    • +10 defense for me. 10 runs is 10 runs. But on defense, I think there's a small, hidden bonus in there of getting pitchers off the field, keeping them healthy, and keeping them pitching with confidence.
    • I agree that I'd like to see more. I think a trade for a relief piece will happen before the deadline. When, and how big an addition it is, depends on the ripple effects of how well the Means, Bradish, and Wells recoveries go.
    • Would be nice if Cooper had something to say about Mayo’s defense.  We know he can dominate AAA offensively.  Cooper doesn’t need to tell us that.
    • Tony, I really did not intend that to be disrespectful at all. There were several other posts about Basallo's tough start and I was simply providing an alternate take that maybe it's not too much to worry about since he's so young for the level he's at. I will acknowledge "nothing to see here" and the "lol" does come off snarky, but it really was not intended as a shot in your direction specifically. It was more of a "hey let's pump the brakes". It was just strictly my opinion, and yes, my opinion is often wrong.  But I do think it's worth mentioning in the context of his rough start that he's super young for his level and coming off injury. Those are big factors. My way of delivering that thought was admittedly clumsy and reads more fanboyish and flippant than I wanted it to, so apologies there.
    • True. So any combination of guys will score runs with the same net run differential. I guess part of the game would be to construct a roster where you have players with a bunch of different skillsets, and then maximize each player's advantage depending on the situation. That is also definitely something the Orioles have done very well under Elias/Hyde.
    • I dont know if this is pertinent to the post...but I want people to see this quote about ONE of the prospects in question: " I resisted writing about Mayo last week, as he just continues to impress, week after week, and how many times can I write that he hits the ball really hard, hits it in the air, doesn't swing and miss very much and is very young? So instead, I'll just hope that he'll be up in the majors soon so I don't have to find new ways to express just how elite of a prospect he is. Jordan Westburg's emergence has perhaps clouded the immediate future for Mavo, but there's no question he's shown everything he needs to. He checks every analytical box, and hopefully the Orioles find a way to squeeze him into their major leaque roster soon. JJ Cooper, Baseball America
    • Saying all of this, if Holliday gets a hit and a walk tonight and looks comfortable, I'm not necessarily making the change. If he looks totally lost still, I would. Tonight.
