Meltdown thread

I agree....Everyone like Mark, but he batted in the low .230s with 150+ strikeouts two years straight....No one, and I mean no one, would think he'd been putting up All-Star/MVP caliber numbers...

If we're going to fairly play the hindsight game, then let's also look at how terribly Adam LaRoche, Edwin Jackson, Jeff Keppinger, etc. are doing....these were also suggested for the O's....)....

Reynolds has played 19 games at 1b, and 12 each at DH and 3B.

I don't see why Reynolds and Davis couldn't alternate between DH and 1B this year.

They would have complemented each other nicely given Davis beats up righties better and Reynolds hits lefties.

Here's what I think: coming into the season, the outfield is almost certainly McLouth, Jones, Markakis, so that puts Reimold out of there. Reynolds closes the 2012 season with a 106 OPS+ and has made a career of above average offense coupled with pretty atrocious defense. Is The Toe a cool trick? Of course. Does that mean Reynolds is a good option at 1st? Duquette thinks no and figures, I have Reimold who can also bat right-handed, he can DH for a million dollars and has a good shot of achieving a 106 OPS+ (or whathaveyou), I can make him a spot OF to free up the DH slot, Davis settles in at first, and that's a good lineup. Now between Reynolds' and Reimold's salaries I have an extra $5 million for absorbing contracts for midseason trades.

If you go into 2013 thinking Reynolds will play like he had the past two years minus a slight age decline (I mean he's only 29), for $6 million, I think it's perfectly reasonable to pin your hopes on Davis 1B and Reimold DH. One of these things has worked.

As far as SP being the problem, yeah. And also, maybe RP soon, too, since the SP isn't carrying its share of the water.

Not to mention, we already had Betemit. So, that lineup would only be against LHP.

Don't forget Josh Hamilton. How many people wanted him?

Shhhhh! In the midst of a losing streak you're only supposed to mention the desired acquisitions that would have positioned the O's 12 games up in the standings.

For example: Prince Fielder and Mark Reynolds, awesome investments in our future. Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton, any idiot could have seen their issues coming a mile away. Dyan Bundy should clearly have been traded for Headley and half the San Deigo organization, while nobody in their right mind would have traded Gausman or Manny.

Poor way to look at his response. He didn't mention either player and they weren't the only options the O's had this past offseason.

That said, I don't see how letting Reynolds walk because you didn't want to pay him $6 million as a smart move. Where else was that money allocated in the team?

Once again, I like Mark Reynolds. I think he was a great teammate and he had nice moments as an Oriole. But the back and forth about not re-signing him is pretty silly. He's on a hot streak right now. Obviously the Indians are getting their money's worth so far but surely it can be seen as a smart move by Duquette to not pay him $6 million. His entire tenure as an Oriole was only worth $0.6 million dollars (according to fangraphs).

Look at his numbers now, they're going back to normal Mark Reynolds numbers. He's shockingly not hitting 300 anymore, nor is he getting on base at a 37% clip. His numbers for May are only respectable because he's hit 4 homeruns, but he's only hitting like 200 overall and not getting on base. But we really should continue to beat this dead horse.

My bad. I forgot whatever the O's do is the right move. Its not as if we have a hole at DH that people warned about or a hole in our SP that was discussed before the season. Since none of that has come to pass I will drop it. Obviously I am a bad fan for questioning anything. :scratchchinhmm:

I went from being disappointed to being angry. It is early, but a loss like this can determine the direction of a team. I am at a loss for words.

I might have to turn off the Orioles for a bit to maintain sanity.

Go ahead, vent here. Let it all out....

I said this in the game thread, but I'll say it again. Watching guys like Hafner, Wells, and Overbay beat us makes me sick. Seriously, when are the Yankees going to get old and start to suck??!! Why are thy immune to this? Half their roster hasn't been relevant since the Bush administration, yet they sign with the Yankees and its like they're the second coming of Mickey Mantle!
