Henry Urrutia: Humble and Generous

He is not a AA player. He's just knocking some rust off. He is a guy who could easily make an impact for us soon.

I can't wait to see this kids numbers after he knocks of this rust. Wow!! I said this in another thread but at this point I would rather see this kid in the role of platooning in LF/DHing rather then Reimold. The great thing about having so many hot hitters is you can afford to give him a few weeks and see what happens. He can't do much worse then Reimold did. The upside is just huge.

I made it to tonight's game in Harrisburg and saw Heny Urrutia play for the first time, and he put up an amazing performance! It seemed as if every time he swung the bat he got a hit. Two sweet home runs, a clean single, and then an infield hit. I'd love to see him play more often!

Having only boxscores and first hand articles and posts to go on, what is missing with Urrutia? What is it that scouts think he will struggle with at the big league level? For a guy that is absolutely crushing AA ball after not playing for two years it sure seems like the O's may have gotten a steal of deal on Urrutia at $750k. I guess I'm curious as to how a guy like this can be had for $750k? Was it simply a lack of exposure and track record in Cuba? Hats off to Fred again. He sure seems like a heck of ballplayer and a great guy on top of that.

It's a good question. Maybe part of it was lack of marketing. Cespedes had an agent that put together a fancy highlights video of him. Some made fun of it, but I wonder if it had an effect. And it didn't hurt that Cespedes is a ridiculously good talent. I think there was also a perception that Urrutia didn't have a lot of power and wasn't a great athlete. While he's not at Cespedes' level in either category, I think he was underrated in both. In several scouting reports that I read, he's reportedly 6'3 and slim, but seeing him - he's a very big guy - I'd guess closer to 6'5 220 - a Ken Singleton like physique when he was here - maybe bigger. So, I'm not sure what to think on how other teams evaluated him before he signed with the O's.

Looking like an excellent signing by DD.

Regardless of how the kids career plays out he is already a winner in life in my book. Between the story of how he had to defect and what he went through and the multiple stories about what I think can be best described as a healthy respect and love for the game you can color me very very impressed.

We have all kinds of stats to project how a guy will play. One stat that cannot be quantified is a guys heart and work ethic. If the start of his career is any indication of what is to come Urrutia will exceed all expectations

I too am curious as well. I wonder if he's just a man among boys at AA ala Lou Montanez, and his weaknesses are not getting exposed.

He definitely looked different than every single player I saw last Friday, home and visiting teams included. He didn't have great results at the plate (2 K's swinging at inside curveballs in the dirt), but you could tell the Rock Cats were afraid of him.

Was at the game today and it was meet the team day and Henry had the longest line, but he made a point take a picture with most of the kids, and some adults too and he has a great smile and seemed like an all around good kid. He hit a home run his first at bat and hit it hard just about every at bat. He reminded me of Matt Wieters when I saw him at Bowie, his at bats just SOUNDED different from every other player in the game.

    • Sending Jackson down does nothing, there is nothing left to prove down there. He is taking good ABs, he is working counts, he looks fine in the field etc. I have used the Cowser comp, not to say he should be sent down, in the sense that Cowser looked particularly lost at times during his callup last year. Jackson is facing some professional adversity for the first time as a professional keep running him out there.    The fortunate thing is he isn't hurting the team in a significant way right now, and when it finally does click the Orioles will be just that much better.
    • Actually move Westburg to 7th so there’s not so many lefties in a row.
    • I’ll go with: Gunnar SS Adley C O’Hearn 1B Tony RF Westburg 3B Mullins CF Cowser LF Kjerstad DH Holliday 2B
    • The question is, can he be productive playing just 1-2 times a week? We don't know because he's never really been in that role. Not everyone can stay productive in a part-time role. I think the Orioles will find a way to get him in the lineup 4-5 days a week. He can play corner outfield (except I would not play him in LF in Camden), DH and 1B. He still does not look great at 1B, but he can be serviceable if it means getting his bat into the lineup. That's a decent amount of ways to keep him and others fresh. Santander probably is at risk to sit a bit more than usual, but this also gives the Orioles an opportunity to have a very left-handed heavy lineup against righties at times, with Mountcastle sitting. The Orioles left-handed heavy lineup could be: 1. Henderson - SS 2. Rutschman - C 3. O'Hearn - 1B 4. Santander - RF 5. Cowser - LF 6. Mullins - CF 7. Westburg - 3B (R) 8. Kjerstad - DH 9. Holliday - 2B Imagine having to face that lineup and then have Mountcastle, McCann, Urias and Mateo for pinch running as a bench. Now don't get me wrong, Mountcastle is not going to be benched all that much, but Kjerstad could give Santander, Cowser, Mullins (with Cowser moving to CF), O'Hearn, Mountcastle, and Rutschman when he DHing a day off.  That's a lot of ways to keep him fresh and get his bat in the lineup.
    • If so, probably just for 2 days or so.
    • Well, there are now 8 days left in April, so 8 days based on last year.  After that, if I recall correctly, he turns into a pumpkin until October.
    • Kjerstad also has had pretty good success vs. LHP in his career.
