Two Guy's we should think about

Why woulnd't they want to if a team came up with a plausible trade scenario?

Teams don't trade for the sake of trading. This isn't a fantasy league. This is a league where unless a team wants to get rid of a player or they get a great deal, they are not making a deal to help out other teams.

Who says they want to?

No one but since they have Swisher at first, it stands to reason they would look to move JOhnson for a piece they need. Plus, they also have a Daric Barton, a much more highly regarded player.

You say teams don't trade for the sake of trading...That is correct but teams(well smart teams) trade strengths for weaknesses.

well what I was thinking ... The A's have N Swisher to play 1B with D Barton waiting in the wings . Maybe if we had a front office that could try and be creative they might could offer Billy on their own accord a deal .But your right that is a fantasy .

Even if its not Johnson he seems to be the kind of player we should try and get . Exspecialy if we arent going to spend money .He hit 15 - 58 - 275 in 375 ab his rookie year . This past season he slumped early and just as he was warming up , the A's sent him dowm where he then lit up AAA before he got called back up . If he were in our system he would be the highest upside position player we would have not countuing Nick . Maybe our new kid Bill R will be but thats a ways off . :)

Johnson would be an interesting player. Only problem is what Oakland needs and what we'd have to give up. I think we're talking more Garrett Olson level than James Johnson here.

Possibly right and if Johnson was 23 or 24, i would pull the trigger but he is 27 and that is too much to give up.

I would much rather go for Carter, Kotchman or Huber.

Johnson could be a DH. Barton could move to LF. Oakland needs offensive players and they aren't going to trade Johnson unless they don't think he is going to help this team. If Oakland doesn't want to trade him then it would take an Erbe to pry him away. I see all these "fair" trades but in reality fair trades are rare. Someone gets the better deal or Someone eventually gets a Pedro for nothing.

First of all, theres no way Barton can play the outfield. He's a former catcher, turned 1Bman, I don't think he has nearly enough speed for an outfielder. Plus, most scouting reports say his defense at 1Bman is average at best, most think he is a full time DH.

Swisher has a lock on 1B, so Dan Johnson is pretty much positionless. Because of his age and the fact that he had a terrible year last year, no one is going to give up a prospect along the likes of Erbe ,or Olson/Liz for that matter, for him.

Oakland could hold onto DJ, but the only way that helps them, is at the AAA level, especially if they hold onto Frank Thomas.

I'm sure you remember us going around and around not long ago about Justin Huber and Liz/Olson.

Well Dan Johnson is a guy I could see you getting in exchange for Liz. Maybe Olson would do the trick.

Those 2 are too much for Johnson. We may have just signed a guy like Johnson for nothing...Sing from the Cubbies.

I wouldn't go that far... at 25 Sing fell off the table for who knows what reason, hitting very poorly at AA/AAA. At 25 Johnson was the PCL MVP, and at 26 he had an .806 OPS in the majors. He fell off last year, but there's a big difference between a .700 OPS in a down year in the majors and hitting .190 with a K every three at bats in the minors.

Explain to me how we overvalue Liz and Olson...This should be real good.

You'd rather keep both Liz and Olson, and go with Brandon Sing at 1B, when you could achieve a major upgrade by moving one of them for Dan Johnson.

That's foolish, and overvalues Liz and Olson.

Wrong again Dave!!!

Actually, i would rather trade Liz or Olson for a better, younger option and keep Sing in AAA as depth.

When the Royals traded for Shealy, the talk was they were doing it so they could turn some of their other corner guys into young pitching.

So, let's assume that Huber is one of those guys they would consider trading...I am curious as to what you think they would get for him Dave?

Do you think someone is giving up a top 20 pitching prospect for him?

    • Yeah, basically this, that Westburg's underlying numbers (EV, barrel %, xwOBA) seem to point at this being pretty real, or at least that there's nothing 'undeserved / lucky' about this hot streak, if it's just that.
    • The problem with a Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers/Bradfield outfield roster is there are no right handers to handle LHP. I don't think and completely left handed outfield is the destination for an organization the values versatility.
    • Looks maybe concussion related.
    • How can you not be romantic about baseball? This seems slightly poetic. I enjoyed reading, and correlated your experience in the stands back to what I watch in Game 1 on MASN.  It was also pretty cool to hear Jim Palmer give you a shout out in Game 2 of the series on Live TV.
    • I am not worried.  It just doesn’t remotely meet the eye test.  He has been great in the field . I can think of at least 3 outstanding plays he has made and not any that I thought he should have gotten but didn’t. Meanwhile Holliday is 3 OAA and I can’t think of an outstanding play and can think of a number I thought he should have made.
    • Nicely stated Roy. Every since I was 9 years old and saw the O's vs. the Tokyo Giants in Tokyo in 1971, I've been infected with the Orange/Black virus. There is no cure and I don't want one. You and I sat at the lunch table with Jim Palmer at the 1970 World Series Champs reunion, and its still one of my enduring baseball memories. You said I looked like Carlton Fisk! I was at all 3 games in this Angels series, right behind the O's dugout. I got to see all our boys, and just simply love to watch this team play. And in true baseball fashion, the one game on paper we should have dominated (GRod vs. 8+ ERA Channing), we end up down 7-0 and lose. But watching Gunnar's homers, his electric triple, and he made a fantastic play today on a ball that went under Westburg's glove, Adley do Adley things, Cowser, holy crap. Kimbrel v. Trout with bases loaded, bottom of 9th, 2 outs, down by 2? That was fun. Next game Trout bats leadoff and torches a GRod fastball for a homer to the opposite field.  An observation.... If you didn't know anything about the team, and you only watched game 1 batting practice, you'd think Cowser and O'Hearn were the studs of the team. Mountcastle was taking BP with the reserves and he put on a show as well.  Home after 3 straight days watching this O's team, so jealous of the Balt fans in Balt that get to see the team with regularity. It's a special bunch.
