Top 20 Orioles prospects after the draft

Recommended Posts

Assuming the Orioles sign their top 10 rd picks, what's your updated top 20 prospects?

*I'm not sure there is an overslot picked after the 10th rd who would crack the top 20, even if they signed...

Tyler and Ayers would probably crack the top 20. They're mega-longshots to sign though.

Here's how I'd go, assuming Gausman and Steve Johnson graduate:

1. DBundy

2. Schoop

3. Delmonico

4. EdRod

5. Harvey

6. Hader

7. Urrutia

8. Walker

9. Wright

10. Hoes

11. Hart

12. Marin

13. Davies

14. Ohlman

15. Sisco

16. Berry

17. Kline

18. Tarpley

19. Seabrooke

20. Wilson

this is a rough guess at best

I am guessing Delmonico is ahead of Urrutia because of age? But who ultimately has the higher upside does everyone think?

Delmonico's power potential puts him comfortably ahead of Urrutia for me (and pretty much everyone else), plus his age and level are more impressive than Urrutia's. Urrutia's a good player and all, but Delmonico has all-star upside which isn't something you can say about many 20 year olds.

Esposito is pretty much a lost cause, yeah.

The interesting thing about this draft is how much room there is for improvement in each pick's prospect status. The first nine picks could all become top ten prospects if things go right for them. Clearly Rajsich and Duquette believe in the player development system, and if you just look at the last year and a half, there's really no reason not to. It'll be a test, but if the development team passes it, things could look pretty good a couple years from now.

It loses a little bit if Gausman graduates though. But he is likely the only graduate unless Urrutia is called up following a freak end of game jumping accident of all three OFers.

No question it loses some if Gausman graduates, but even then you have Marin sliding up who seems to be a pretty intriguing player.

I agree that that seems to be the deepest top 10 I've seen in a few years.

Seems pretty high on Kline, who wasn't really showing much before the injury (in a very, very small sample size obviously). Any reason for that other than his status as a #2 draft pick? Just curious if you'd heard any good reports on him.

I want the phone number to the guy Tim Berry has lobbying for him.

Esposito? Lost cause. Parker Bridwell? Done. Xavier Avery? Topped out. But there's Tim Berry, a lefty starter going on three seasons of 5.00 ERA baseball and he's just hangin' in there.

Why do Avery, Veloz, and Gurka make your list? I'd have to say Avery is a non-prospect at this point. Gurka is more a project than a prospect. And Veloz doesn't have the results.

    • If they draft and develop players sucessfully enough to trade for MLB pitching then what is the problem?  It's accomplishing the same goal.   Having a MLB rotation. We've made the playoffs the last two years.  Look at how our depth chart stacks up, 2025 - Eflin, Grayson, Kremer, Suarez, Povich, Rogers, McDermott - Bradish on IL, Wells on IL, Maybe Means? 2026 - Bradish, Grayson, Kremer, Suarez, Povich, Rogers, McDermott, Wells, Means? 2027 - Bradish, Grayson, Kremer, Suarez, Povich, McDermott, Wells, Means? We have the ammo in the farm to make any trade we want still.  We could get Crochet if we wanted this offseason it would just not be pretty.  We have 6 or 7 draft picks in the top 100 this draft.  Next draft we could get additional picks for Mayo ROY, or Mullins and Eflin netting comp picks.  That could be another 6-7 draft picks in the top 100 in 2026.   If Elias' strategy is allowing us to fill out a "good" MLB SP via draft capital, then what does it matter if it's the draft picks themselves, or what we can use the draft picks to buy?
    • I like avoiding SPs in general in the rebuild.  TINSTAAPP is a thing because (as the thread somewhere says) "they all break." Teams chase pitching because of everything people are saying.  High quality, healthy pitching is expensive in every sense of the word.  Which also means position players fall.  Warren Buffett 101 "Be greedy when the market is fearful.  And be fearful when the market is greedy." Elias almost certainly feels that position players have a higher floor than SPs.  Vs. the stars and scrubs (real prospects or not) type mentality.  **As a coach that's a struggle too.  Do I focus on the stars because they're going places?  Or do I focus on the scrubs to raise the floor of the team?  Org building isn't an apples to apples comp to me coaching.  But maybe more than we think. But we're out of the rebuild now (liftoff).  Elias has shifted SOME over the last 2 years drafting by taking SPs earlier.  I really doubt he will ever draft an SP in the first round.  In 90% of cases, I'm fine with that.  But hope to see some type of trend toward taking an SP or 2 in day 1.  Is it BPA or needs based?  Or some type of mash-up of those 2 with a portfolio management chase for Alpha while reducing Beta? Not many of the 2-5th round college OFers has been much of anything.  Plus, we're now getting multiple day 1 picks (near top 100).  Everything after that is basically a lottery ticket regardless of position. Maybe there is wisdom in drafting SPs there and trading them for established SPs (ala Burnes/Hall+, Eflin/Baumeister+).  It negates development risk and minimizes health risk (still/always some but targetted at the MLB level where you want it).  The cost is team control.   Maybe there is some wisdom in signing rebound candidates annually as rotation fillers?  We have the home park that will help rebounders get back on the map for big market teams.  Not saying 100% or even 60% of the rotation should be that type.  But our #3 or 4 guy could be a rebounder.  And a AAA stashed guy too.
    • That’s quite nice handful of picks . I hope Elias rolls the dice on drafting pitchers  .  Don’t wait until near the end of  draft to select pitchers
    • Definitely disappointed they were not able to get a pass rusher or safety. Getting a dime corner is very underwhelming. Guess EDC think the Ravens can just outscore everyone.
    • I don’t think anyone with any degree on intelligence believes Rogers can be counted on as a viable member of this rotation  The plan is to upgrade the team to go after the World Series.    If they bring in two better guys they can make Rogers earn his way back and trade a guy like Kremer.    plus Grayson requires a back up plan as his Lat issues can come back at anytime. Which eliminates taking a shot on Snell and his adductor.
    • They eventually have to start developing their own pitching.  You absolutely have to have pitching to win.  If you cannot develop your own pitching you are forced to acquire it via: 1.  Established pitchers via free agency, usually forcing you to overpay 2.  Trade, again, you generally have to overpay (look at Rogers and he wasn't even established) 3.  Look for diamonds in the rough, maybe you get lucky and fix a few of them.  This is more of hope than strategy The price of pitching is only going to get worse.  The draft strategy needs to be reconsidered.
