Verlander is a stud. Probably too much to think the Orioles could have put together a package like the Astros did and he would have likely nixed the deal anyway.

Lucky for the Astros that Angelos nixed the Britton trade.  I don't think they would have moved on Verlander if they had Britton.

It will be interesting to see where they are in 5 years. They're definitely employing a very strong sabermetric philosophy.

The Oakland Athletics have gone 33-10 (.767) over their last 43 games.

The northern Californians are now 4 games behind the defending world champions in the AL West division.

I just read Astroball and highly recommend it.  There is no doubt the Astros and Dodgers have two of the best and influential analytics groups in baseball.  The Astros made some huge mistakes along the way and no doubt benefited from drafting Correa and Bregman in consecutive years, but they made a LOT of good decisions since 2012.

It is difficult to read Astroball and not think the Orioles are bring knives to gunfights when it comes to Dan Duquette's analytics group versus other teams; and how Buck would have implemented the information had he had it.

It would be nice to snag someone from one of these teams to lead our front office going forward, but there is still so much to investigate analytically, so much going for the teams already leading the pack, and so much historic dysfunction in Bmore for me to think anyone decent from those groups wants to come over here to compete with the NYY, BoSox, and Rays.  I don't know where our next GM will come from, but it will be interesting.

The Houston Astros were oh-so-close to a deal with the Nationals for Bryce Harper in August of 2018, according to GM Jeff Luhnow.

The Red Sox (2-6), the Cubs (1-5), the Astros (2-5), and the Angels (1-6) have all sputtered out of the gate to begin the 2019 season.

The Astros have gone 9-0 since this article was written, including a 3-game sweep of the hottest team in the Majors (the Mariners) on their homefield in western Washington.

The last time that the Astros were swept on the road was in September of 2017, at the hands of the Oakland Athletics.

The Cincinnati Reds, their sweepers, suddenly find themselves only 5 and-a-half games behind the 1st -Place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.
