Travis Ishikawa called up

Dickerson >>>>> Pierce. Better athlete, left handed hitter. Can play excellent defense, pinch run and there are a lot more right handed pitchers then lefties. If one has to go, it should be Pierce.
I believe Dickerson is out of options? If so, I really hope we don't lose him. I see nothing unique in Pearce.

No no no... it's Valencia and Ishikawa that compare to and challenge Pearce. Valencia is a right handed platoon player and Ishikawa is backup 1B. In no way do Dickerson and Pearce overlap. Dickerson contributes pinch running speed, CF depth and LH platoon.

Trying rate one over the other is like saying O'Day is going to put Teagarden out of a job. They both do completely different things.

From Roch: "We have to do something with Ishikawa by midnight tonight, so we're trying to find a spot for him," Duquette said. "I'm not sure we're going to have it resolved by game time. We may bring him up, but we don't have it resolved. We haven't decided what we're going to do.

"We could trade him or let him go to another team. We could do something, but it may not be done for today."

So he might not make the roster for game time tonight?

That might be better for the team. Call up Stinson or Belfiore for the day and send them down after the game for Ishikawa.

Sorry... but I can't effectively retort such a non-applicable response to my post.

Sure they do- they are both backup outfielders. But since they bat from different sides of the plate the choice isn't going to be between Dickerson and Pearce if Ishikawa stays, but rather it will be between Paerce and Valencia.

Technically, Dickereson, Pearce or Valencia is going to get the short straw if Ishikawa stays. A good case can be made for Dickerson to stick around because he's more versatile and faster than the other two. But Pearce has looked ok defensively lately. If Pearce and Valencia continue to hit and Dickerson does not, that could mean Dickerson is gone. Of the three, it seems Dickerson is the one who has the most control over his destiny- if he hits he stays. Can't say that about Pearce or Valencia since they aren't as good defensively.

I think Travis Ishikawa can refuse the call up and become a free agent. That's something he just might do, especially knowing that a call up by the Orioles is likely just a ploy to buy some time while while they try to find a trading partner for him. If he becomes a FA, both he and the Orioles know he will quickly find another team to sign him.

As for some kind of trade package including Ishikawa and others for an SP, I don't like the idea that DD and the Orioles might be rushed into it and could make a bad decision.

I think that's where the midnight part of the above Duquette quote comes into play. Ishikawa filed... whatever he had to file... on Sunday. The team has 48 hours then to make a move. That's midnight tonight. In other words I don't think he can refuse the callup till after midnight tonight.

    • I did it again!   9/9, all played for the Orioles.   36 points.
    • He's at -.2 right now so yea, he'd need to exceed three wins the rest of the way.  Seems a bit too optimistic for me right now. Pretty fair cutoff point.
    • Sure, but would they add him to their 26 man roster and let him stink/rehab in the majors?   I doubt it.
    • I imagine that if the team has another great season AND they resign any of the young star(s) or a big time FA or retain Burnes to a big contract, attendance will go up again next year regardless of opponent. That’s how this thing goes with competent ownership and a bunch of young star players. I know some people believe that the public/fans will just show up. But we are in an age where people are more informed than ever because of access to information through the internet. The difference between now and the last time the O’s were good 12- 16 is two things IMO. 1) That all felt temporary. And as a fanbase we carried a large degree of anxiety worrying when the other shoe would drop and it would all be over. 2) This time feels like the org has much more of a plan/vision/competence. Last time felt accidental to a degree. Now it very much feels that we have a great foundation that is sustainable for long term success. Maybe even a dynasty? Because baseball is at the end of the day an entertainment business, people are going to invest/spend money/show up at the games based on how it makes them feel. If they feel good, hopeful and believe they will keep coming. If they are worried and it’s an anxious experience when they think this will all be over soon, they are not going to be as apt to invest in that thing (whatever it may be).
    • Nothing stopping the O's from Non-tendering him in the offseason so no difference in job security. I get where you are coming from, to me it seems like additional risk without additional reward.
    • Zippy chance Hays goes anywhere. One, it’s SSS.  You just can’t cut guys during slumps.  You’re never going to have all 9 guys tearing it up at the same time. Everyone is over Urias because Holliday is up. Holliday is struggling. What’s next move onto whatever player is in a slump?  Mountcastle has cooled off. He better get it together 😢
    • I voted over. Bat to ball skills are elite. He will hit. He has defensive value that will show as he gets more comfortable at 2B. His speed and base running also add value. He's at least a 3 fWAR player.
