Kevin Youkilis has a herniated disc in his back and will undergo surgery to repair it on Thursday.

He is expected to need about 10-12 weeks of rest and rehab, which puts his season in jeopardy. It's another brutal blow to the Yankees, who have been without third baseman Alex Rodriguez (hip) all year. Youkilis was batting .219/.305/.343 with two home runs and eight RBI in 28 games as A-Rod's fill-in at the corner.

I hate to see players get hurt, but it's about time the Yankees have had to deal with age and the injuries that come along with it. You can only try to skate into the playoffs with 35 year old players (and older) so many times.

May this Mariano Rivera farewell tour end with empty stadiums in September.

I don't see how losing a 648 OPS corner infielder with suspect defense is a brutal blow.

Or, more significantly (with hindsight) ...........

Great free agent signing for the Yankees.

I don't see how signing a .648 O.P.S. corner infielder with suspect defense was going to help this team very much in the first place. :laughlol:
