Will Angelos pay for an arm, or is it business as usual

Gammons talked to GM "With their pending TV deal, Ruben Amaro isn't trading him or Papelbon."

Not sure what the TV deal has to do with trading either guy to be honest. It means that the Phillies are not hurting for money, but it doesn't mean that they wouldn't move him for the right package. With that said, the Orioles offer would likely need to be something like a 5-1 with Schoop, Delmonico, Britton, Hoes and Rodriguez to really have a chance. Even then I think a package with a couple top-40 guys would beat our offer since Schoop has a broken back, Hoes looks like a 4th OF option and Britton hasn't performed up to expectations. The Phillies could do better than what we have to offer sans Gausman and Bundy.

Angelos is not going to pay $20MM/year or more for any pitcher... It does not matter if the Phillies were 14.5 games out of first. IT IS NEVER EVER GOING TO HAPPEN.

If we are going to get a pitcher its going to be a innings eating vet ala Saunders of 2012... someone probably in the range of $6-$10MM salary and we pay the remaining prorated salary.

1- Payroll is up about 8 million over 2012

2- Would Saunders even be that big an improvement?

3- Amaro has stated repeatedly that Lee is not on the block

4- After watching him run this team from 2000-2013 why would you expect more from him? It isn't 1997 anymore.

The thread should have simply ended after this post.

The thread should have simply ended after this post.

Let's recap:

- Phillies are still in race

- Phillies GM has said several times that Lee is not on market

- Lee is 34 Y.O. and is under contract for $25M/yr thru 2015

- If Lee becomes available, there will probably be numerous suitors

- Outside of Bundy and Gausman, O's really don't have the chips to swing this deal

Why does the name "Cliff Lee" keep coming up on this board?

Our top 7 pitchers, in some order, are: Hammel, Chen, Tillman, Gonzalez, Britton, Garcia, Wada (maybe). I submit to you that's good enough to get us well into September. Sometime around the end of August we'll hopefully have two electric arms to supplement: Bundy, Gausman.

I'm not necessarily opposed to acquiring another pitcher, but it seems to me that we have the pitching depth and quality to 1) make a long run this season and 2) keep us close in the playoffs.

What we need is a RH DH and a 2B. Note that I'm ok with our LH bats because Betemit should come back and Urrutia could really be a very good option for us this year. With an even better lineup, we'll be much more likely of breaking through against Verlander, Scherzer, Sanchez, Sabathia, Buckholz, etc. in a playoff game. If we're going to make a run this year, those are the positions we should be targeting, IMO.

Ummm oooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkk....

if anything we need to improve our pitching... We have had one of the top offenses all year even with a AAAA DH and 2B rotation...

Angelos still has spent no money on this team even though the stands have fans and MASN is making him millions. Shouldn't we as fans expect more? They wouldn't even sign Saunders. We need Lee!

It doesn't make financial sense for the O's to make a deal for Lee, it has nothing to do with Angelos. There is noy way a mid market team like the O's can dedicate 25% of their payroll to one player unless it was in the final year of the players contract. Does anyone here really want to take on that cantract and risk not being able to sign someone like Chris Davis long term?

2013 34 Philadelphia Phillies $25,000,000

2014 35 Philadelphia Phillies $25,000,000

2015 36 Philadelphia Phillies $25,000,000

2016 37 Philadelphia Phillies *$27,500,000 $27.5M Vesting Option, $12.5M .

I do think we need a trade but it is not for Cliff Lee

A discussion on whether we need to trade for another starter is valid, but phrasing it in a way that once again calls out Angelos just shows how ignorant some fans can be.

We've had a winning, playoff contending team for two years now, and yet some people still look for any excuse to blame ANY Orioles problem on Peter Angelos. Its disgusting if you ask me. In addition to the great points made by others, there is also the fact that Manny was brought up last year, and Gausman this year, thus costing Peter money in the long run. But again, don't let any of the facts in this thread get in the way of a good old fashioned biased rant.

Yeah, if I understood this post correctly, I believe that he/she summed up what you are getting at:

Are you assuming the O's are going to fail, or are you blaming Angelos for their success?

Especially since the Phillies swear they won't trade him.

Never capitalize the names yanks or sox.

The Ravens rebuild their defense in one month after winning the world championship. The Orioles don't spend ANY money equivalent to what they make. Thank God for Steve Bisciotti. At least one Baltimore owner that will pay to win.

    • I think it’s possible he would agree to be optioned, but he has 5 years and 7 days so being optioned for more than 3 weeks would cause him to not hit free agency this offseason. Once he’s optioned he can’t contractually force the Orioles to call him up quicker than those 3 weeks. They could make some sort of handshake agreement on it but it would be putting faith in the Orioles to stick to that. If he’s confident he’s healthy and as ready as he’s going to be, even if the Orioles are not, he’s better off rejecting an option.
    • Obviously they weren’t going to hit at that level, but this slump is surprising.
    • It’s a little hard to tell how 9k new flex memberships translates into tickets.  There are $600, $1200 and $2500 packages.  I assume most are at the lower level.  That would buy you about 20 tickets, the higher levels 40 and 83 tickets, at $30 each (estimate, since you can buy any level of seats).   I’m just going to make a rough guess that it’s 300,000 tickets.  But, how many people are buying these who previously went to a bunch of games as a walk-up buyer?  How many switched from having a fixed ticket plan to a flex plan?   I’m guessing it’s a decent chunk in each of those categories.
    • I can’t remember a more surprising start in the past 10 years. He definitely earned the right to start 2 more times. Then if Bradish is ready we can reevaluate him vs Irvin.
    • The one watchpoint with Suarez is how he will do when hitters have more data and more time to prepare. Teams can punch in spin rates, velo, horizontal/vertical movement parameters into Spinball iPitch machines to simulate an opponent’s pitcher. With only being announced a few hours before game time and not having pitched in MLB in 7 years, hitters were mostly flying blind.    The stuff looked great though.
    • Very strong outing - 8/1 K/BB in five no-hit innings.     He had already had good K/BB results his first two outings, though he had been hit around a lot while filling up the strike zone during those. He was a UDFA last year, perhaps due to having missed the season at Liberty.    BP had the detail this morning he'd been suspended for undisclosed reasons, and I'm sure Elias has insight whatever they were. A college arm where a data point on bonus pool allocation as a yardstick is absent in the typical way.
