Fire sale in New York? Just a thought

What would the world look like the New York Yankees? hegemony over the baseball world ended? Consider that over the last twenty years the Yankees have never placed lower than 3rd and since that time they have always finished 1st or 2nd. During the dynasty era the Yankees were free spenders and for the most part very lucky since all their contracts were agreeable to both sides.

On November 20, 2008, Hal Steinbrenner gained control of the New York Yankees and the direction of the Yankees seemed to lean toward a more financially conservative. This past off-season the Yankees shied away from some of the big ticket items and sought help from some moderately price veterans to replace some aging and wore parts.

They acquired Kevin Youkilis and Vernon Wells just to shore up certain weaknesses. However, Youk will be out for the next 10-12 weeks and Mark Teixeira reinjured his wrist. Both players were not really producing to expectations but New York was remaining very competitive. Consider the payroll and talent on the Yankee DL:

1. Alex Rodriguez

2. Derek Jeter

3. mark Teixeira

4. Kevin Youkilis

I dare say that at the corners Yankees have close to 50 million dollars in contract commitments this year. Contracts that will never be worth the on field production to the Yankees. Steinbrenner clearly saw diminishing returns on his investments and decided to go a more conservative route. However, with the season nearly approaching the half way point the Yankees must make a tough decision reload or rebuild?

Astute Posters at OH have wondered why would the Yankees be interested in Travis Ishikawa? I believe that the Yankees are sellers this year! I believe that Yankees could and should trade Mariano Rivera to the Tigers! I think that Cano should be traded off as well. I think that the Yankees should do what Boston Red Sox did and get rid of all those bad contracts. I just can?t imagine that there would be any buyers and as result will underperform for years to come. One thing is clear the dynastic reign of the Yankees is over!

The upshot of all this that Yankees have a lot useful parts to many teams. Robinson Cano comes to mind when the Orioles look for a 2nd baseman.

Free agency is quickly becoming fools gold in the post steroid era. By the time someone is a free agent, they have a limited shelf life of productivity. This makes the job of a Yankees, Dodger, Angels, Tigers big market team much harder. They have to do the hard work that teams like Tampa and the O's have to do to compete. That being said your post reminds me of a fairy tale that won't happen. Trade Rivera? Would you advocate trading Cal for prospects as he declined? Cmon man!

The Yankees will never trade Mariano. They would not do that to him in his last year.

Cano is realistically the only building block they have. In 3 years, he may be the only current player still on the team.

:agree: times 1000.

Rivera is in his retirement tour and the Yanks would never do that. Say what you will about them, but they do have some class.

As for Cano, I agree he is the one guy to build the team back around. For those who say he's lazy, I suggest you watch this play he made last night against the Dodgers. Simply amazing! Cano isn't going anywhere!

As for the Yanks in general, it may be a down year, MAY be, but they always restock. They never completely rebuild. Every time we start a thread like this, they win the division. Lets hope this thread breaks that string.

They are saddled with ARod and Teixeira's contracts, but they have a lot coming off the books over the next year or two. I wouldn't sing ding-dong the witch is dead just yet.

No chance they trade Mo. None.

I did not think that Boston would be able to rid themselves of all those contracts but they did. Rivera is untouchable but can and should be traded. CC Sabathia is another candidate. Will it happened? I think they trade some players.

No, he really shouldn't.

This whole premise is a bit ridiculous. They're 7 games over .500. Where were we last year at the end of July? If you think the MFY are going to give up on this season, you're lost.

They have shown some financial restrain this year and there production simply is not sustainable. I don't think they are looking to add more payroll at this juncture.

The only financial restraint they have is self imposed, to get under the luxury tax. I still don't think they care too much about that. They're not going to damage a billion dollar organization to save a few million.

Here is really interesting thread from a NY Yankee's Forum.

Re: 2013 Hot Stove/ Trade Rumors Thread

IMO, what really matters for getting the team back in position to win rings is not whether management plays some over-the-hill veterans the rest of this year and next, but whether the management resists trading prospects who can help after 2014 for any veterans who will not.

Things have broken badly for the team this year, especially the Teixeira and Granderson injuries and Jeter set-back, but also Youkilis and much more. Some of this could be predicted and some of it not, but the important thing now is not to throw good "money" after bad, i.e. throw away prospects trying to salvage what is not worth the attempt. I just hope the FO can maintain the business success without having success on the field for a couple of years. I hope the fans permit this.

    • If those signed those 2 guys to a contract today, it would have absolutely zero impact on the payroll this year, next year or 5 years from now.    Those players are already signed for the next several years. They aren’t going anywhere. All the long term extension does is keep them under contract an extra 1-2 years. Thats it.
    • I don't either.   But I expect Ortiz and Cowser to help the Os this year,  and I don't think Cease is a sure enough of an upgrade to trade them both for him.   In the right deal I'd certainly let them both go as they certainly aren't untouchable.  But I think 2 of our top 6 prospects is too steep a price for Cease.
    • I loved what Wells did in the first half last year.  I loved what he did in the first half of 2022.  I loved what he did in the first half of 2021.  But after three years, here are his career splits: 1st half: 231.2 IP, 3.42 ERA 2nd half: 47.2 IP, 6.61 ERA No matter what role he’s been in, he’s been excellent in the first half and absolutely fallen off a cliff after the all star break, three years in a row.   I’d love to see him prove that he can get through a whole year and remain effective.   But how do you plan for it?  What contingency plan to you have if the same pattern holds for a fourth year in a row?
    • Ownership issues aside, my preference would be to use resources to extend Gunnar and Holliday through their prime career years if possible rather than sign a highly paid reliever. Realizing that won’t happen, let’s go Hader and try to win while they’re here.
    • The Orioles took Andrew Politi last year when they were expected to compete, so I could see them taking a flier on a potential bullpen arm if they're intrigued enough by them. I just hope if they do they come with more upside than a Politi-type. I never understood that selection since there really wasn't a ton of upside and the stuff was just "bleh".  I don't ever research these guy prior to the draft, especially now that the Orioles will not be picking until late in the first round. They did of course find Tyler Wells in the second round so sometimes there's a diamond in the rough, but that was also after COVID cost teams a chance to look at minor league players for a year and why the Twins may have thought Wells would not be selected or was too raw to stick.
    • Sure, 2-3 years would be great but he will get 4-6 years and even if he would sign for 2-3 years, I’m guessing his AAV will be higher than the Os will spend. Kimbrel, Robertson and Chapman will all get 1 year deals. The Os probably sign one of them. I would rather trade for Kopech and move him to the back of the pen personally. I think his upside is higher than those guys and you can likely acquire him for a “bargain” relative to the cost of established high leverage relievers.
    • I have no interest in having the Tides win another AAA title
