Ramirez has 1,999 career hits after going 3-for-4 in his last game on Saturday.

He did not play on Sunday, and his Brewers had the day off on Monday.

As stated in the O.P., Ramirez went 3-for-4 on Saturday to reach 1,999 hits, so I'm pretty sure that his manager (Ron Roenicke) benched him on Sunday so that he could have the chance to get this milestone hit on his birthday today.

I'm not so sure that he (the manager) would have done the same if the Brewers were in the thick of the playoff race.
